Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) have signed a three year sponsorship deal worth $600,000 (K10,800,000 Approximately), annually.
The deal which will see the annual package increase by ten percent yearly was signed on Friday morning at a colourful event held at Southern Sun Hotel in Lusaka.
The deal has two parts with the first dealing with support for the WAFCON bound Copper Queens.
The second part will see the introduction of a new Cup Competition, the Zambia Football Association (ZFA) Cup that will include menās and Women’s teams with all leagues involved from amateur to Super League.
KCM acting Chief Executive Officer Malcom Mewett said he hopes this will be a start of a long and beautiful relationship for KCM and the Copper Queens through FAZ.
āWe want this to become the start of a long relationship with the team.
We wish you all the best win, lose or draw KCM will be with you. This is the start of a beautiful relationship,ā he said.
āThe Copper Queens have become a symbol of determination, resilience, and
excellence. From COSAFA and WAFCON bronze in 2022, to back-to-back Olympic
qualifications in Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, and our historic FIFA World Cup
appearance in 2023, our women have carried Zambiaās flag with pride. Our
Under-17 team has qualified for the FIFA World Cup three times ā 2014, 2024,
and 2025 ā and is well poised for a third consecutive appearance.
Despite these milestones, corporate support for womenās football has not
matched the joy these ladies have given the nation. KCM is stepping into that
space deliberately. We are not here for one tournament. We are here for the
long term.ā
āThrough this partnership, KCM is committing US$600,000.00 to support the
Zambia Womenās National Team. This includes our support for WAFCON 2026
and the womenās package under the inaugural KCMāFAZ Cup ā a historic
competition that KCM is fully funding to ensure it is competitive and sustainable.
This aligns with our broader commitment to womenās empowerment. Through
our Gender Action Plan, Women in Mining initiatives, and our Sustainable
Livelihoods Programme, we are creating opportunities for women in technical
roles, in entrepreneurship, in leather production, poultry, tailoring, and early
childhood education. When women are empowered, families prosper and
communities grow stronger,ā he added.
FAZ Women’s National Representative Colonel Priscilla Katoba and Copper Queens right back Margaret Belemu gave a vote thanks, praising KCM for their gesture.
