Zambian teams recorded mixed results in the CAF Inter-clubs Competitions as MTN Super League Champions ZESCO United have shockingly been eliminated from the CAF Champions League while Sensational Zanaco has progressed to the next round.
ZESCO came into the match trailing by a goal having lost 1-0 in the first leg.
After a myriad of missed chances, Team Ya Ziko took the lead at the half-hour mark thanks to a beautiful overhead kick from Zimbabwean midfielder Tafadzwa Rusike but the lead only lasted five minutes as Andy Magagula leveled matters with a close-range finish.
The hosts only needed four minutes in the second half to go in front again Winston Kalengo with the goal making it 2-1. With ZESCO needing a goal to progress, Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba earned them a penalty, Kenyan talisman Jesse Jackson Were stepped up but his effort was saved by Ncamiso Dlamini in the Royal Leopards goal.
Numba Mumamba made several changes with Jesse Were, John Ching’andu, and Rusike making way for Enock Sakala Jnr, Edward Lungu, and Chanda Mukuka but they could not find the elusive goal as the match ended 2-1, 2-2 on aggregate, meaning ZESCO United are eliminated from the competition.
At Heroes Stadium, Abraham Siankombo scored the only goal of the game as Sensational Zanaco edged Akanangui of Equatorial Guinea 1-0 and 3-0 on aggregate to seal progression to the next round.
The Bankers will meet either Express FC of Uganda or Al-Merrikh of Sudan.
In the Confederation Cup, Red Arrows qualify to the next round via a 2-1 aggregate score after a goalless draw away in Eswatini and will face CD Primeiro de Agosto of Angola.
The first leg is set for the weekend of 15-17 October and the second leg matches will be held on the weekend of 22-24 October.
