Perry Mutapa is Cooking Something Special in Choma

The FAZ-MTN Super League is back! Week 1 delivered plenty of excitement, even if it fell short in terms of goals. Out of eight games played, only four produced goals — a total of 10 — while the other four ended in goalless stalemates.

The standout clash was between NAPSA Stars and Green Eagles, a game fueled by plenty of pre-match drama. Much of the build-up centered on the transfer saga of Augustine Mulenga, with rumors strongly linking the former Orlando Pirates winger to the Choma-based side. In the end, it was NAPSA Stars who confirmed his signing, adding an extra layer of spice to the fixture.

On the pitch, the tactical battle lived up to expectations. NAPSA Stars lined up in a narrow 4-3-3, seeking to dominate the central areas. Green Eagles, however, matched them in formation but introduced a clever tactical twist. Full-backs Hedson Pina (right) and Spencer Sautu (left) consistently inverted into midfield, disrupting NAPSA’s rhythm and creating an absorbing contest in the middle of the park.

Eagles went on to open their campaign with a convincing 2–0 victory over NAPSA Stars, a result that not only secured three valuable points but also highlighted their tactical maturity and resilience.

Coach Perry Mutapa’s blueprint was clear: disciplined defending, controlled transitions, and tactical flexibility. His bold use of Pina and Sautu as inverted full-backs tilted the battle firmly in Eagles’ favor and showcased a side that could become one of the league’s most tactically intriguing outfits this season.

This wasn’t just a win; it was a statement. For years, Green Eagles have been seen as solid but unspectacular, often punching above their weight without breaking into the league’s elite. But under Mutapa’s guidance, there’s a growing sense that this could be the season they push for more.

What makes the project in Choma exciting is the blend of experienced campaigners such as Collins Sikombe, Moses Phiri, Spencer Sautu, and George Chaloba, mixed with emerging talents like Kunda Nkandu. Mutapa has instilled belief and tactical discipline in this group, and if their opening display is anything to go by, Eagles will be a difficult side to break down — especially at home.

Of course, it’s still early days. The season is long, and consistency will be key. But make no mistake, the signs are there: Perry Mutapa is cooking something special in Choma, and the rest of the league would be wise to take note.
