Mweene’s penalty save sends Pelembe to hospital

Mamelodi Sundowns winger Elias Pelembe was reportedly hospitalised for a night with “emotional fatigue” after squandering a penalty kick that effectively cost Mozambique a chance of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The botched spot kick dominated the media in Maputo after the weekend loss to Zambia.

Pelembe, known as Dominguez in his home country, had his effort early in the second half saved by his clubmate Kennedy Mweene before Zambia went on to snatch a 1-0 victory and a place at the 2015 finals in Equatorial Guinea.

Maputo newspapers said Pelembe had been admitted to hospital with a fever and exhaustion, drained by the blow of missing out in front of 42000 fans at Zimpeto Stadium.

“The golden boy spent the night in a city hospital with high fevers and ill health, morally very shaken,” reported Folha de Maputo.

Zambia are Mozambique’s bogey team and in some 14 international outings have not lost to the Mambas.

“I apologise to the people of Mozambique for the result and, as head of the technical team, take full responsibility,” said coach Joao Chissano, the former fullback at Bidvest Wits.

  1. Too sad for Pelembe next time ask CAF not to put you in the same group with Zambia coz it appears you cant qualify ahead of Zambia…….

  2. Comrades I’m moving the theme above to send a loud message to Janza to start with Lubambo Musonda as opposed to ineffective Musakanya………

  3. Too bad!
Doesnt he know Mweene? He should have asked Asamoah Gyan,Drogba, John Obi Mikel Gervinho,Kole,or Patrick Ochan, the ugandan chap and many others I cannot remember who should be in this list.
You do not just step out to take the penalty kick when you already know that the best goal keeper in the entire Africa is between the two sticks.
Hope he recovers soon and go back to tell others to think twice before stepping out to take a penalty shot!

  4. Ohhhh my God this Pelembe boy should have a strong mind, penalties have been missed by big guys like Roberto Baggio, Willie Phiri, Messi, CR7, Assomo Gyani, Rooney, Zidane Drogba, etc and they have moved on. Up to an extent of being hospitalized, well thats something else. By the way did he expect to beat Mweene his own team mate? Stand up young man its not the end of the earth yet.

  5. dont worry pelembe, it was worse for asamaoh gian. the guy actualy retired. ask drogba, kolo toure, the list is endless. TIZ(this is Zambia)

  7. Mweeneeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!! The best goal keeper in the world. He is scoring goals for Zambia, ask Nigerias goal keeper, ask Ivory Coast goal keeper, ask Niger’s keeper and many more.
The only goal keeper to send Asamoah Gyan on retirement while our beloved neighbours are being sent to ICU. kikikikiki.

  8. Faz do something about the fast depreciating turf at levy stadium! We can’t afford to watch such a magnificent piece of Art to waste away just like that! The question is; how do South Africans, North African, West africans manage? Maybe they use different grass! Can someone educate me please! I really fail to understand! The turf is very bumpy as well!

  9. Pelembe, sorry but i think its more about the money they missed which was dangled before them. And foolishly they believed that armed with a panga they can drop a giant like Zambia. Get over it my man.

  11. Being Mweene’s teamate you should have known that you don’t handle Mweene with kid’s gloves. It was only right for Mweene to save the penalty bcoz it was erreneously awarded. Tuff luck, but you know its indiscipline to qualify ahead of your seniors. Try next time but not against Zambia.

  12. @Watchover my condolences you are amonngst few blogers who analyse issues and the game before you post. May the almighty God bring comfort to you and your family.

  13. What did Pelembe expect? to score a penalty against Mweene?
Elyo nokuba uyu Pelembe wakale sana don’t they have fresh legs in Lorenco Marquese?

There was a time a West African player stopped an Ashios Melu free kick with his head, or was it chest? he became an ancestor in 2 weeks. So even Pelembe is lucky to have come out of hospital.

Roan Antelope, please next time do your homework first and then check your audience before committing yourself. This idea of making a name by saying he is the one who scored a winning penalty does not usually work with Mweene, at least for now maybe in future. A lot of so called starts have faded because of that.

  14. I still remember these talented young men who sent waves of victory across the globe even without players who were playing in Europe namely; Kalusha Bwalya, Charles Musonda, Lucky Msiska, Stone Nyirenda, Johnstone Bwalya etc
    These guys were local
    Efford Chabala (goalkeeper)
    John Soko (defender)
    Whiteson Changwe (defender)
    Robert Watiyakeni (defender)
    Eston Mulenga (midfielder)
    Derby Makinka (midfielder)
    Moses Chikwalakwala (midfielder)
    Wisdom Mumba Chansa (midfielder)
    Kelvin “Malaza” Mutale (striker)
    Timothy Mwitwa (striker)
    Numba Mwila (midfielder)
    Richard Mwanza (goalkeeper)
    Samuel Chomba (defender)
    Moses Masuwa (striker)
    Kenan Simambe (defender)
    Godfrey Kangwa (midfielder)
    Winter Mumba (defender)
    Patrick “Bomber” Banda (striker)
The Chipolopolo were a very promising Zambia national team. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul they thrashed Italy 4-0. They had their eyes on the 1993 Africa Cup of Nations trophy and a place at their first World Cup.

You guys would say we are going to win the world as u continue to demonstrate your little knowledge about the game of foot-ball.
Great players have lost penalties so what are u guys saying about your goal keeper who was beaten twice in Kumasi with cheap goals

  16. Thanks brothers for your comforting words. It was a very depressing moment I didn’t know wat to do but to share with all of you here.Though we u have not been physically being together but the encouraging words you have given me show we are more than just mere bloggers .God bless u all
