Kabwe Warriors legend Sebastian Ngungu has died after an illness, the Zambian club has announced.
Ngungu died in the early hours of Tuesday, with Kabwe Warriors describing his death as a loss to a man who played a significant role in the club’s history.
“Kabwe Warriors Football Club is saddened by the passing of Club Legend Sebastian Ngungu,” the club said.
“Mr. Ngungu died in the early hours of today after an illness.”
Ngungu emerged in Kabwe’s football scene in the late 1960s, a period when Kabwe Warriors were among the leading clubs in Zambian football.
He became an important part of the Railmen during their golden era, contributing to the club’s trophy successes between 1970 and 1987.
“Sebastian Ngungu is remembered as one of Kabwe Warriors’ enduring legends, a player whose career symbolized the grit and pride of the Railmen during the club’s golden years in Zambian football,” the club said.
Unlike many players of his generation who moved between clubs, Ngungu spent the bulk of his playing career with Kabwe Warriors, establishing a lasting connection with the club and its supporters.
His longevity and contribution during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history earned him legendary status at the Railmen.
Kabwe Warriors paid tribute to Ngungu as a figure whose legacy remains part of the club’s history.
“Unlike many contemporaries who moved between clubs, Ngungu spent the bulk of his career at Kabwe Warriors, cementing his reputation as a Club Legend,” the club added.
His death marks the passing of another member of a generation that helped establish Kabwe Warriors as one of Zambia’s leading football clubs.
