E Guinea hires Cuban Doctors in Ebola fight ahead of AFCON

Equatorial Guinea has hired 50 Cuban doctors as part of the fight to contain the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in the lead up to and during the Africa Cup of Nations next year, according to an official source.

However, with completion of the qualifiers, Equatorial Guinea will have to contend with another threat after Ebola ravaged Guinea qualified to the finals on Wednesday.

1,200 lives have been lost in the west African state of Guinea, with 1,900 infected with the disease.

Nations Cup organisers CAF had forced Guinea to play their home matches in Morocco, who ironically were last week stripped of the 2015 staging rights after insisting on a postponement because of fears of the spread of the virus.

As a consequence Guinea on Wednesday faced Uganda in the Moroccan port city of Casablanca, winning 2-0.

The national Ebola watchdog body in Malabo and the Cuban embassy have signed an agreement to recruit “50 Cuban doctors for three months” with a view to tightening procedures in the run-up to the January championships.

“The national Ebola awareness and monitoring committee has recommended that visa applications from anyone who has travelled in countries already affected by the Ebola virus should be turned down and they should be refused entry to Equatorial Guinea,” the TV reported.

Equatorial Guinea has so far not reported a single case of Ebola within the country.

  1. Morocco are just being very childish in their decision to refuse to host the AFCON 2015.
First the Tournament is still 2 months away and with viruses any thing can happen in this period. they can escalate or even die down completely.
If they were serious how did they allow Guinea to play their home matches in Morocco, when that country is the epicenter of the epidemic? anyone of the players could have brought it to their country. Tulebako serious ne fintu fimo ba Morocco.
I have said it before and will say it again. I am not a medical doctor or a virologist, but I think, Just like a seed put in completely dry soil can never germinate, Ebola seems to prosper under certain conditions, which are found in Equatorial rain forests and cannot ravage populations in Desert conditions or anywhere where those necessary conditions are missing. This is why it may be found in Congo DR but not in Zambia.

  3. CAF should have just canceled the tournament and its not still late to do so…… GUINEA who happened to be worst hit ebola nation qualified and their supporters will be going in large numbers to AFCON and you know what that potends…. Thanks to GOD my country didnt qualify.. Even if we had qualified, we would have pulled out…….

  4. Noni better luck nxt time, 9ja seems to come out stronger wen they miss one edition of the AFCON. Too bad for West Africa as 9ja has always been the regions best shot at the cup, considering the fact that Cameroun falls in Central Africa.

  5. noni my frend. take heart. I know how painful it is as defending champions handing over the trophy without kicking a ball. atleast Zambia qualified.

  6. I was initially in support of Morocco concerning their refusal to host, but after seeing that Guinea, the only country affected by ebola to qualify, has been playing their home games there anyway it doesn’t make sense. They are also hosting the world club tournament which will probably attract way more fans. #unafrican
