Former Spain international Andrés Iniesta has reportedly agreed a deal to become manager of Gulf United FC in Dubai, marking the start of his coaching career after retirement from playing.
The World Cup winner, who was a key figure in FC Barcelona’s era of dominance, is understood to have completed the agreement on Friday, taking charge of the UAE First Division side as they continue to build on rapid progress through the leagues.
Iniesta’s appointment brings a high-profile European influence to Gulf United, where Zambian pair Emmanuel Mutale and Enock Sakala Jr are already part of the squad.
Mutale joined the Dubai-based club on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Nkana FC in September 2025. Striker Sakala Jr, 23, arrived in February 2026 on a two-year deal after a short spell with Nkana that ended by mutual consent just months into his contract.
Sakala’s journey to the UAE has included stints at Chippa United, a loan period in Egypt with Modern Sport, and earlier development at ZESCO United, where he scored 12 goals in the 2023/24 MTN Super League season and helped the club secure CAF Confederation Cup qualification. He also previously trained with Orlando Pirates during pre-season.
At Gulf United, both Zambians have contributed to a team tally of 39 goals in the UAE Division 1 League, with the club sitting 10th on 25 points after 26 matches. The duo have combined for 11 of those goals.
Iniesta’s arrival adds further spotlight to a club competing in the second tier of UAE football.
