FAZ AGM approves Quota system

Clubs in the Zambian Premier League will now only be allowed to have five foreign-based players in their squads at the start of the 2021/22 football season.

This follows the unanimous approval of the new quota system by delegates at the 2020/21 Annual General Meeting held at Urban Bliss Hotel in Kabwe on Saturday.

The vote ends the long-standing debate to the introduction of the quota system that goes as far back as 2020.

Earlier there were submissions (informal debates and discussions) to maybe just limit the number of players in the matchday squad to either five or three from some stakeholders.

Explained in its simplest form, the new quota system requires the Zambia Premier League clubs to register five foreign-based players in their teams.

  1. Thanks but when is Our Premier league going to have a Quota as it is in some Neighbours.
As long as we can flood our Premier with Foreign players then Forget about our National Team to Perform better.

  2. Thanks for this AGM but Quotas in Premier league. How many players have you suggested yo be in each club

  3. FIve players are too little, the Zambian league needs exposure and growth. What you have done is now spoon-feeding the local players and reduced the competition to level 5 can’t you see what has happened to the South African league they are regretting now. Don’t just copy a system please brainstorm and study thoroughly. Foreign players bring competition and a different flavour to your own style of play plus they raise the league to a different status and now what you have done will dwarf the league for a long time.

    • I fully agree with this sentiment. 5 players is too little and just when our league was starting to get some recognition, we shoot ourselves in the foot. This should have been 5 per match day and not as a whole. Our players need stiff competition to raise their level and if all they have to compete against are the local substandard players, this move will result in the exact opposite of what is intended. I don’t know what’s wrong with Kamanga as this is the yet another blunder in unresearched changes like was the case with moving the season to the peak of the rain season.

  4. Five is okey, improves and creates more chances for our local players who ar in the rural areas and lower provinsio division

  5. You are killing the competition in football you people and this is going to affect the performance our nation local team. Let there be enough competition for the local players to prove themselves.

  6. Your last statements appears, FAZ requires all Premier League clubs to have 5 foreign players, when the five is the maximum that clubs can only employ.

  7. To me, five also appears to be little as from my understanding these are players in the employment books of a club. At some point, you could find that three or even four are not playing due to injuries or just other fitness/form issues. Let’s continue educating ourselves. What happens to loaning of foreign players in that number, 5? For clubs which already ‘oversubscribed’ in this regard and still have contracts with players into the next season and beyond, what happens? Let’s continue educating each other.
