Copper Queens to face Uganda in Los Angeles 2028 Olympic qualifiers

Zambia’s women’s national team will face Uganda in the second round of the qualifying campaign for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The Zambia Women’s National Team, popularly known as the Copper Queens, were among 29 nations granted a bye into the second round due to their superior ranking. They will now meet the Uganda Women’s National Team over two legs scheduled between 5 and 13 October.

The winners of the tie will progress to the third round, where they will face either Ghana Women’s National Team or the victor of the preliminary clash between Mauritius and Djibouti.

Zambia are aiming to secure a third consecutive Olympic appearance, having featured at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games. The Copper Queens recent rise on the continental and global stage has seen them establish themselves among Africa’s leading sides.

The qualification campaign will be contested over five rounds, with only two teams ultimately representing Africa at the women’s football tournament at the 2028 Summer Olympics, scheduled to take place from 11 to 29 July 2028.

Elsewhere, reigning African champions Nigeria will begin their campaign in the second round against either Sudan or Comoros, while several high-profile fixtures headline the draw.

Tunisia are set to take on Senegal, Benin will face Mali, and Morocco meet Congo in another standout tie. Cameroon have been paired with Guinea, while Côte d’Ivoire will play DR Congo.

The qualification series is expected to begin with preliminary matches in June and will run through to December 2027, when Africa’s representatives for Los Angeles will be confirmed.
