Zambian football mourns rising defender Theresa Musatila

Zambian football has been plunged into mourning following the death of promising young defender Theresa Musatila, who passed away on Wednesday morning after a short illness.

Musatila, who played for ZESCO Ndola Girls, was regarded as one of the brightest prospects in the domestic women’s game.

The club confirmed her passing, describing it as a devastating loss to the team and the wider football community.

A graduate of Zambia’s junior national structures, Musatila rose through the ranks of the Copper Princesses, representing the country at both Under-17 and Under-20 levels. She featured prominently in regional competitions, including the COSAFA Under-17 and Under-20 tournaments between 2021 and 2023, and was part of the Under-17 side that won a silver medal in 2022.

Her talent and potential were further recognised in 2023 when she earned a place in the La Liga Talents Programme — a prestigious initiative that saw her spend a year in Spain combining elite football training with academic studies in Madrid.

Musatila began her club career at Nkana Queens at just 14 years old, before moving to Police Doves in 2020. She later joined ZESCO Ndola Girls in 2023, where she was part of the squad at the time of her passing.

In a statement, the Zambian Premier League paid tribute to Musatila as a “young versatile defender whose promise and passion left a lasting mark on the women’s game,” noting that her journey reflected dedication, growth and excellence.

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) also expressed its sadness, with president Keith Mweemba describing her death as particularly painful given her status as one of the standout beneficiaries of the Spain-based development programme.

“We are saddened to learn of the death of Theresa Musatila, who was one of the talents nurtured within our structures. She had grown from representing the Under-17 and Under-20 national teams and was looking like a Copper Queens prospect,” Mweemba said.

Musatila had recently been recovering from injury before her passing in Kitwe.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the football fraternity, remembering a player whose career, though tragically cut short, had already shown signs of remarkable promise.

She is survived by her family, friends and teammates.

May her soul rest in peace.
