Disappointing COSAFA outing comes to an end as Zambia bow out

The Zambia National team has bowed out of the ongoing COSAFA Cup following a goalless draw against hosts South Africa.

The Chipolopolo Boys could only manage a fourth-place finish in Group A with four points after they only managed one win and a draw losing the other two matches.

The loss has complicated matters for gaffer Milutin ‘ Micho’ Sredojevic who was already walking on thin ice going into the tournament.

Zambia started the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Lesotho before succumbing to another shock defeat, 1-0 to Eswatini. A brace from Justin Shonga secured a 2-1 win over Botswana but a goalless draw against log leaders South Africa means Micho’s men only finish in fourth place with four points.

Zambia has managed to reach the final in the last three regional tournaments (before this one) winning one (2019) and losing twice to Zimbabwe (3-1 in 2017 and 4-2 the following year ).

The ZamFoot Crew understands that Micho may be on his way out after this disappointing outing and a new gaffer will be appointed with several local coaches looking to take over in the interim.

The Chipolopolo boys only have a month plus before starting their quest for a maiden place at the World Cup with Qatar 2020 World Cup qualifiers set to begin in September.

  1. When have tried local coaches and they have lamentably failed. Engaging a local coach will sink the Chipolopolo ship deeper .

    • We have never given a Zambian coach so much time. We we had Wada we beat a Algeria home and away. We did by far much better than Micho and his Belgian predecessor under Wada.

  2. i think wada is the best candidate, this micho guy, i have lost confidence, he keeps changing players, today its this one, tomorrow its that one

  3. Lets get to facts here, the mental strength of most players we have now is week and herve let us when he saw that the 2012 spirit is gone. since then even our football has failed lamentably. council these footballers and let them not waste tax payers money..

  4. Sometimes I wonder why we believe that an expatriate coach is better than a local one, while in europe they don’t engange african coaches.why can’t we send even 10 local coaches for courses in different european countries inorder for them to acquire the necessary qualifications to coach at national level than every time spending huge sums of money on failures,it’s time we push for our own.

  5. I totally agree with the training of our own local coaches as allided to by @Team Tiger. The Government can take 2 coaches each from Service teams and from National Assembly. Send half to Brazil and half to Germany. After they finish their courses bring them back and rotate them. Those that went to Germany go to Brazil and vice versa.

This is not my idea because it was tried before and ot worked wonders. If I remember correctly, Ben Bamfuchile, Obby Kapita and others benefited from this.

All service teams would greatly benefit and lift the standard of the game. This would then raise the bar very high and compell other teams to up their game. We cannot keep relying on expensive foreign coaches. When even our Universities are now handled by Zambians.
For now can we seriuosly think of building our team around the all conquering former U20, now U23. Add three from the younger generation and three or so from the old guard give them Numba Mumamba and Beston Chambeshi and let’s see how this works out.
