Nkana re-sign goalkeeper William Mtonga as hometown hero returns to Kalampa

Nkana Football Club have completed the signing of goalkeeper William Mtonga on a one-and-a-half-year contract, bringing the former academy graduate back to the 13-time MTN Super League champions ahead of the new season.

The 26-year-old returns to Kalampa after spells with FC MUZA, Lumwana Radiants and Nchanga Rangers, adding experience to Nkana’s goalkeeping department.

Mtonga began his football journey at Rops Academy before joining Young Nkana in 2016, earning promotion to the senior team a year later before continuing his development elsewhere in the Zambian game.

Speaking after sealing his return, Mtonga admitted the move carried deep personal significance, insisting the club had never left his heart despite his time away.

“I am excited to be back at Nkana Football Club. A lot has changed since I was last here, but one thing has never changed, Nkana has always been in my heart. The years I have spent away have helped me mature both on and off the pitch,” he said.

The goalkeeper believes the experiences gained at his previous clubs have prepared him for a second spell at Kalampa.

“When I came through Young Nkana and into the senior team, I was still learning and competing against experienced goalkeepers. Looking back now, I can say those experiences helped shape me into the goalkeeper I am today,” he added.

Mtonga also spoke about the emotional connection he shares with the club’s supporters. “I grew up watching Nkana. I grew up supporting this club. Even while I was away, Nkana was always close to my heart. Coming back feels special because this club has always been part of me. To the supporters, I am coming home as one of your own. I am your son and I ask for your support as we begin this journey together once again.”

Nkana Chief Executive Officer Mwansa Kapyanga welcomed the shot-stopper back, highlighting the value of combining academy roots with senior-level experience. “William understands what it means to represent Nkana Football Club. He came through our development system, knows the expectations that come with this badge and returns having gained important experience at different clubs. We believe he has grown tremendously both as a goalkeeper and as a professional. His return strengthens competition within our goalkeeping department and we are confident his experience, maturity and commitment will benefit the team throughout the season.”
