Chipolopolo to face Guinea in quarter final

Zambia will face Guinea in the quarter finals of the 2016 CHAN tournament after they played to a goalless draw against Mali.

In what turned out to be a dull encounter, Zambia failed to register a shot on goal in 90 minutes though the possession even between the two teams at the end of the game.

Lwandamina rested veteran midfielder Isaac Chansa and Dauti Musekwa who are both on yellow cards with Solomon Sakala and Spencer Sautu coming in and it was the George Lwandamina side who looked threatening in the early exchanged.

However Mali looked more threatening going forward with two shots on target which significantly troubled Jacob Banda in the 28th and 36th minutes.

Lwandamina did not seem interested in giving the fringe players a chance as he waited until the 66th minute to make a change when he introduced Buchizya Mfune for Solomon Sakala.

This came with changes in positions with impressive Benson Sakala moving to the right back position, Mfune slotting in the central defensive position while Adrian Chama moved in to the defensive position with Jack Chirwa pushing up.

There were also appearances for Adamson Mulao and Mwape Mwelwa who came in for Patson Daka and Christopher Katongo respectively late in the match.

With Zimbabwe and Uganda drawing 1 – 1 in the other match, Zambia qualify as group leaders with Mali taking second position.

The Chipolopolo will now travel back to Rubavu where they will play Guinea on Sunday.

  1. We have avoided the lethal and extremely dangerous Tunisian team. Our back four will have to contain Guinea’s very quick and deadly front three. Chicken George has to come up with a plan of how the defence is going to stop them!

  2. 2 goals in the group stages. and some bloggers think chicken is a coach. our luck in chan s running out. i dont see zambia beating the compact guinea. i said before under george we are playing predictable and aimless football.

    • A win is a win. If a team is defensive minded and can top the table with two goals, what is wrong with that. You failed to ask the question “How many goals did Zambia concede”? The equation should be two sided – Did not score many goals, did not concede ……. goals.

      • ba mudala iyo ni exellent point! talk italian football.biggest win is 2-1.tatwaba nacisuma.we full of negative reinforcement.let us were positive where its due.chan is comin to zed.never mind about da opponent but mind about how to prepare about them.good luck chipolopolo.

    • How did Egypt(The Pharaohs) win in Angola If you can remember, the problem is you hard stone critics without much reasoning.

  3. Tough game, a scoreless draw is a good result, jacob banda still with a clean sheet as no goal has been allowed so far. Chansa’s absence was felt in the middle of the pack, katongo was heavly policed by a tall defender. Hope the coach has a better plan going forward, with Tunisia out of sight,Guinea can still be a threat. However I feel this cup equally ours, just like any team’s in the Q8. Good lucky my Kopa Bullets, always at heart my Chipolopolo!!!!!!

  4. Congrats to the Boys for moving to the next stage of this tournament. Good luck against Guinea! Zamfoot or other readers, any news on Sunzu? We really need him for Africa Cup qualifiers coming soon.

  5. Rwanda should be praised for its world class stadia. Now I’m asking myself why has caf given afcon 2017 to Gabon, 2019 Cameroon, 2021 ivory Coast and 2023 to guinea. What kind of nonsense is that. Rwanda has better stadia than those counties and I’m sure other African countries have better quality why is west Africa being favored it’s not fair.

    • We shall never stop complaining. Other West Africans, including my Ghanaian friends are furious that only French speaking nations are in line for the Cup of Nations. Is Issa Hayatou being responsible enough? Are his days over? Is his influence dictating the African soccer trends? We need answers.

  6. Good result. We didn’t concede and that is good.

The team must not let up now. The team must improve for the next match to stay alive in the competition!!

After surpasing group stage expectation, people are wanting Zambia to go further…

  7. we don“t play football like that 90minutes no shot at goal who is the striker mali where not good behind but failing to have a shot at goal we need the grace of god

  8. Its good we didn’t lose. But this kind of display leaves much to be desired. No proper coordination and losing balls unnecessarily. Striking force is also blunt. I am not sure if we’ll go far in this tournament. Our team is also too defence minded. No wonder we are not conceding (which is a plus) and are not scoring many goals. But so far so good.

  9. The good thing meeting Guinea is that their players are similar in stature to ours. Zambia should play short passes and not those long balls. Mulawo should start against Guinea. All quarter final matches will be interesting, thus:
Rwanda vs Congo DR, Cameroon vs Cote dvoire, Zambia vs Guinea and Mali vs Tunisia. No easy match here. Congrats to the boys for going up to the quarter finals.

  10. @billy yuo are spot on. you cannot play a game and not register a serious threat on goal. some bloggers have blinded themselves to thw fact that we have only scored two goals against uganda and zimbabwe.

    these are worrying stats.

  11. @paradox I dont know why u keep refering to afcon 2012. that is water under the bridge. in 2012 we had scored 8 goals by end of the quarter finals.

the football we are playing is pathetic. guinea will clobber us. mali would have beaten us except that they were playing it safe and looking to secure a point.

iam a realist who is looking at the bigger picture. Russia 2018. chan is a tournament without benefits. its an afcon dress rehearsal. with chicken as coach we will not make it to russia with his pathetic tactics. thats what iam looking at

  12. thats y I said if zamfoot has archives since 2012 pepo will see for themselves that there is little difference with wat u r saying & wat u said abt herve during afcon and the team

  13. Against Guinea play the way u played against Uganda ninshi ni home & dry, like mali ninshi ni air rwanda back 2 load shading. Otherwize all the best

    • Spot on Victor….we should be proud win , lose or draw…not like some perennial arm chair critics that are never satisfied… when we win ati we never played well…etc like a dripping tap!

  14. At john what do you mean if you say world class stadia.. Those grounds are not suitable to host afcon .. You can throw a stone from outside and struck a player …

  15. Top of the group!Well done Zambia !!! All that matters is the result. Now lets clobber Guinea and whoever next…. this team is going far!!!!

  16. Qualification aside to be honest Zambia football is going down how do a team like Zambia fail to register a shot @ goal, Kalu will finish Zambian football. Katongo shouldn’t be near the senior team is team has gone.

  17. Was the game plan in the Zambia vs Mali to win or to just ensure we stayed top? We had already qualified and any serious coach would never have even risked his greatest assets like Katongo, Chansa and others. Look at Congo DR do you think they lost because they were outplayed? No!!!! they are being tactical. Rest your best to give them more time to recover and give them hunger, then unleash them at Quarter final Stage.

Whether we registered 30 shots at goal or 0, is not important what was important was did the coach achieve his aims and objectives?

You are crying for Russia 2018, and already blaming “Chicken George,” for the foreseen failure. Interesting. Which coach has ever qualified Zambia to the World Cup? None. So if ‘Chicken George’ fails, will he have made any historical milestone?

You are allowed to cry, lament and wail, but be sensible.

  18. I think mulao looked sharper and forceful than Daka, but just that he prayed fewer minutes. Could he be tried the more next time

  19. You undulate between pain causing and elating staff…briefly connected to the mind that thought it… pull away! The cost of being a soccer fan…painful at times. Keep posting people and don’t take yourself too seriously.
