Power Dynamos midfielder Marvin Nabwire has earned a place in Kenya’s 38-man provisional squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The midfielder has been included by Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy as Kenya prepares for back-to-back Group D fixtures against Eritrea and Guinea.
Nabwire’s call-up comes at an important stage of the season, with the midfielder also part of the Power Dynamos squad preparing for Saturday’s CAF Champions League first preliminary round clash against Sudanese giants Al Merrikh.
Kenya will open their AFCON qualifying campaign at home against Eritrea on September 26 at Nyayo National Stadium before travelling to Conakry to face Guinea on October 1 at Stade du 28 Septembre.
The Harambee Stars are in Group D alongside South Africa, Guinea and Eritrea.
Although Kenya already has an automatic place at the 2027 AFCON as one of the three co-hosts, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, the qualifiers will give McCarthy an opportunity to assess his squad ahead of the tournament.
Nabwire is among the emerging players included in McCarthy’s provisional selection, which also features the return of captain and leading striker Michael Olunga.
Olunga has been recalled after recovering from a pelvic injury that kept him out for around five months. The Al-Arabi forward is two goals away from becoming Kenya’s all-time leading scorer, having scored 34 goals for the national team.
Stade de Reims defender Joseph Okumu has also returned after recovering from a knee ligament injury.
