Charles Zulu helps Zanaco overcome Nchanga Rangers

Zanaco moved into second position with six points on goal difference from Lusaka Tigers on the MTN FAZ Super League standings with 2 – 0 victory away to Nchanga Rangers on Sunday.

The match will be remembered for the opening goal scored on 41 minutes which sparked debate as to who the goal scorer was between Dave Daka and Charles Zulu.

Aubrey Funga had raced to keep the ball in play as he was pursued by Chongo Chirwa on the right by – line and found a pass to Dave Daka who slide the ball towards goal but it was Charles Zulu got the last touch before the ball went over the line to give Zanaco the lead four minutes before the break.

Zulu shot emphatically into the roof of the Nchanga Rangers empty net, latching onto a loose ball after Daka reacted quicker than Nchanga Rangers goalkeeper Pascal Kasonde to get to Funga’s pass. However match officials gave the goal to Dave Daka.

On the hour mark Zulu had a chance to increase Zanaco’s lead but he blasted his effort over and wide when it looked easier to score after being set up by Daka.

Eight minutes later, Zanaco increased their advantage when Nchanga Rangers defender Kamuzati Kabwe scored an unfortunate own goal after he attempted to head away Aaron Katebe’s defensive clearance only to catch his goalkeeper Kasonde out of position for the ball to bounce into an unguarded net.

In the final minute of additional time Emmanuel Banda nearly made the result respectable when he stepped up to take a free kick he won after being brought down by Salulani Phiri but his effort went off the crossbar.

The result ultimately meant that Nchanga Rangers dropped from 9th into 10th position, swapping places with Power Dynamos on goal difference.

For their week four fixtures scheduled for Wednesday, April 6, Nchanga Rangers travel to Lusaka Dynamos while Zanaco will entertain Power Dynamos at Sunset Stadium on the same day.

  1. I watched this game(Nchanga v Zanaco) on TV and to be honest, it was not a good game. It was a stop start affair, neither side made more than four or five complete passes before being dispossessed. I saw too many misplaced passes, too many high boots and too much of “to whom it may concern.” Watching this game reminded me of amateur league football. In fact I saw a documentary of the Barcelona football academy where 12 year old kids had more quality than the players in that game. I was so disappointed. And I haven’t even got to the state of Nchanga stadium yet. Watching Zambian football is heartbreaking.

  2. @Vunga:you are very right!!the Nchanga stadium in pathetic to say the least!!while the game itself was hell.one would mistake it to be an amature game in Shang’ombo being shown on TV!!both Nchanga and Zanaco were very poor!!I WONDER WHY THEY EVEN PAY SUCH PLAYERS WHO PLAY LIKE MADALAS!!our local league standards have really gone done as i cannot imagine going to watch such a game!!I WOULD RATHER SIT HOME AND WATCH EPL ON TV!!

  3. I watched the game as well. Zambian football has gone very low in terms of standards. Nothing to write home about: very boring, no direction, zeal and enthusiasm. It is a shame that we do not have promising talent in our league. This shows that our grassroots are dead. Hope Kamanga can bring in fresh ideas aimed at revamping the grassroots. Otherwise, the obtaining footballing situation leaves much to be desired: there is serious lack of tactical discipline and flair. I wonder where our coaches got the coaching certificates from.
