Mazabuka is a small town in the Southern part of Zambia with a population of over 71,000 people (2010 census) and houses the biggest Sugar Plantation in the country.
The town is also blessed with talented players who have graced the Zambia football scene some of which include Signs Chibambo, Lameck Silwaba, Emmanuel Habasimbi, Moses Mapulanga, Wilmore Haatembo and more all with different styles of play.
The newest kid on the block is goalkeeper Bernard Mweemba born and raised in Mazabuka (Nakambala Estates Owned By Zambia Sugar Plc), the lad has always stood out during his early development days and has always done justice every time he has been entrusted to stand in between the sticks.
While playing at the locally organized Christmas Tournaments In Mazabuka, the lad made spectacular saves and grabbed the best keeper of the tournament in full support of majority fans.
Bernard was first signed by Yara Fc in 2017 (Formerly Greenbelt) a big move which required a lot of commitment and positivity as he had to fight for game time against old-timers at the club.
He is a special talent and with a good goalkeeping technique which earned him a place and played a majority of the games with spectacular saves and accurate timing earning the support of the Mazabuka fans who would always chant ‘ Keeper Wachalo’.
His good performances caught the eye of Southern Province Provincial Division One side Livingstone Youth soccer Academy who acted quickly to secure his services on loan to help them strengthen their goalkeeping department before the start of the 2019/2020 season.
While in Livingstone the Young Goalkeeper has played 13 games out of 21 with 9 clean sheets including a local derby draw with Zesco Victoria Falls in the Provincial Division One
The ZamFoot Crew caught with the 20 year old who believes he has improved his craft and urged club’s in Mazabuka to give young players a chance to prove themselves.
“The time I spent away from home has made me really focus on being a good player, the form I left here with has really improved and am ready for mature tests in this sport. Am very positive and won’t disappoint once entrusted,” Mweemba told the ZamFoot Crew in an exclusive interview.
“Our local teams need to trust the young ones especially local talent because those from within town play for the club more than those from the outskirts of town, a team needs to understand the benefits of young players cause results or benefits may come after a short period of time” he added.
Bernard Mweemba is surely one name thee Mazabuka football fans expect to make it to the Elite Zambian Super League which is growing every year.
