ZESCO United Return As ZPL Lifts Suspension After Court Case Withdrawal

ZESCO United Football Club have been cleared to resume participation in the MTN Super League after the Zambian Premier League (ZPL) officially lifted the club’s suspension with immediate effect.

In a press statement issued on Monday, ZPL Head of Communications Christina Zulu confirmed that the decision follows a mutual agreement between the league and ZESCO United to withdraw the court case that had triggered the disciplinary action.

“The Zambian Premier League hereby confirms the immediate lifting of the suspension of ZESCO United Football Club from the league,” read part of the statement. “This follows the mutual agreement by both parties to withdraw the court case.”

The development paves the way for ZESCO to return to competitive action, with their Week 20 fixture against Green Eagles now set to go ahead.

In a separate communication to supporters, ZESCO confirmed that the match—initially scheduled for April 8—has been moved to Thursday, April 9, 2026.

The encounter will take place at Independence Stadium in Choma, with kickoff set for 15:00 hours.

The Ndola giants welcomed the decision, thanking their supporters, sponsors, and stakeholders for standing by the club during the period of uncertainty.

“We would like to sincerely thank you, our fans, partners, sponsors and stakeholders, for your patience, loyalty, and unwavering support during this period,” the club said.

Background to the Dispute

ZESCO’s suspension, imposed just four days ago, stemmed from legal action taken by the club after being removed from the 2026 ABSA Cup lineup.

At the centre of the dispute was their league fixture against Mutondo Stars. While ZESCO believed they had met the required 17 matches to qualify for the cup, the league ruled that the reverse fixture had been postponed.

The ZPL subsequently ordered a replay, which ZESCO lost—resulting in them forfeiting their ABSA Cup place to MUZA FC. Dissatisfied with the decision, ZESCO sought legal redress, prompting the league to suspend them.

However, with both parties now opting for an out-of-court resolution, the focus shifts back to football as the league looks to ensure a smooth continuation of the season.
