Zambia Under-15 girls’ national team produced a commanding second-half performance to defeat neighbours Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 3-1 at the ongoing CAF African Schools Championship in Harare.
The two sides went into the break deadlocked at 0-0, with Zambia struggling to convert early dominance into goals.
However, a spirited halftime team talk from head coach Chisala Chibesa proved decisive.
“The girls needed a reminder of the importance of this assignment. I am happy they responded well in the second half, although we took a bit of time to get into our rhythm.” Chibesa said.
Zambia returned from the interval with renewed energy, as Phidah Mazuwa of Woodlands Secondary School stole the spotlight with a clinical hat-trick to seal an emphatic victory.
Reflecting on her performance, Mazuwa credited teamwork and discipline for the win.
“This result is down to discipline, hard work and focus. We remained committed to the game plan and took our chances when they came,” Mazuba said.
Despite the victory, Chibesa emphasized the need for improvement ahead of the next fixture.
“This is a good start, but we must aim for an outright victory in our next game and improve in key areas,” she said.
Meanwhile, 2025 COSAFA Player of the Tournament Hildah Kangwa urged the team to quickly shift focus to upcoming matches.
“We are happy with the win, but now it’s time to concentrate on the next games if we are to enhance our chances of winning the tournament,” she said.
Zambia will be looking to build on this momentum as they continue their quest for continental glory.
