Will Kalaba hand back the armband to Chris Katongo

Chipolopolo Boys coach George Lwandamina is set to name his provisional squad for this month’s back to back 2017 African Cup of Nations against Congo.

While Lwandamina is expected to hand the likes of Clatus Chota ‘Tripple C’ Chama the chance to make their case in the main team, it will be the inclusion of 2012 BBC African Footballer of the Year Chris Katongo that will be the talking point.

After being axed by ex-caretaker coach Honour Janza in 2014, the 34 year old will be making a return to the big stage after he was recalled for the CHAN 2016 tournament where he was Zambia’s standout player.

With that impressive show, Katongo is likely hand Lwandamina a selection headache at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on 23rd March, 2016 as he might have the Winstone Kalengo, Collins Mbesuma, Rainford Kalaba and Katongo all available for selection.

Add Jacob Mulenga if there’s has been a change of mind from a the Far East based striker.

But before that there’s a question of the armband.

While Kalaba has been the captain after taking over from Stopilla Sunzu who relinquished, many consider Katongo as the captain marvel and expect normal service

Flashback to the early 2000s, when Andrew Sinkala declined the armband as he urged then coach Patrick Phiri to maintain his usual players and Zambia went on to beat Libya 2-0 courtesy of Adubelo Phiri and James Chamanga strikes.

It is unlikely that Kalaba will wear the armband if Katongo starts against Congo in Ndola.

  1. No Kalaba should keep the captaincy to Katongo. We don’t want confusion in the team. Unless he himself is willing to do so, but should not be forced.

  2. Chris becomes a child when he see the ball. He just wants to be part of a team and play to win. Armband makes him even more excited. Over the game he is the type someone has to block out for him to stop. He loves it…You have to get Kalaba’s opinion.

  3. I’ve never been close enough to National Team administration to know; can I please be enlightened if there are guidelines for choosing a captain: is the Manager expected to consult the players as well or it’s only his unilateral choice which counts? Thx

  4. No confusion in the team katongo must respect the current captain
if kalaba feels obliged to hand the captaincy then it’s okay but it must be kalabas decision

  5. No ways, it’s Master’s time and after all he is now more influential and hoping the situation is well managed and objectively so

  6. Yes katongo is a very humble man.thts the main reason jacob handed over the arm band.but kalaba shud not hav too much pressure coz for him age is a bit on his side as for chris maybe 2 more years or more.

  7. There are captains who fulfil an administrative role,
There are those who give confidence to a team.
There are those who make you feel like you have a coach on the pitch.
There are those whose very presence intimidates the opposition team.
There are those who inspire a team to perform beyond
    their own expectations.
Without spelling out a name I think we know who the captain for Chipolopolo should be.

  8. Kalaba should keep it. We already know Chris Katongo is a Captain. We don’t know if Rainford is a captain…

One is only custodian, Chris can’t keep it forever so best to hand it down.

  9. I don’t think Chris is obsessed with reclaiming the armband. He’ll be more than happy just to be back in the team. And deservedly so. Besides Kalaba himself It is easy to see that Mbesuma, Mweene and Chris are all natural leaders. You don’t need an armband to be a leader. A team needs a number of individuals with strong character to guide others.

  10. Well, we have said what we want to prevail on the day. The captain can be any of the two and anyone from the team. However, the way it is/will be done is the most important factor to how the team performs.Experience informs me and everyone else who wishes to apply it that consultation is key in solving this matter. If done without consultation the team is likely to have three or four camps in one: Kalaba’s faction,Katongo’s faction, the confused group( they take the side of both groups) and in some cases the group neutral fellas. In any case a crack like this on one’s house wall is never a good thing. It may render the team to perform badly in the field of play. Take a leaf from the Tony Yeboah/Abedi Pele saga.
