Zambia has missed the last two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and only has an outside chance of making it to the Cameroon 2021 AFCON as they lie bottom of Group H with just three points to their name after four games.
Coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has two crucial encounters coming up this month to turn things around h and has named a strong squad already which has seen the return of several players like Nathan Sinkala, Clatous Chota Chama, Mwenya Cyril Chibwe, Brian Mwila, and Kabaso Chongo.
Micho will also have one eye on the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification which kickoffs in June. Zambia is chasing a maiden appearance at the biggest football showpiece.
Zambia’s chances of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup took a big hit when they were drawn into a group with Tunisia in the second round of the CAF qualifiers. Only the group winners advance to the third and final qualification round; Tunisia is the second-best African team in the FIFA rankings, climbing from 35th in the world to 26th since 2016.
The 90th-ranked Zambians will likely have about +500 to +600 odds to advance. According to Sports Betting Dime, if they are generously allotted a 50% chance to win their third-round home-and-away tie thereafter, their odds to qualify at this point would be roughly +1000 to +1100 (which amounts to an 8.5% chance to qualify for Qatar).
Micho has a tricky year ahead to plot a return to AFCON and a maiden World Cup appearance and with the fans eager to see their team at the big stage, The Serbian gaffer has a huge task to meet the high expectations from the Chipolopolo faithful.
Zambia will host Algeria on March 25 before trekking to Harare four days later for the back-to-back encounters in the Group H final qualifiers.
