Nyasa Big Bullets appoint former Zambia coach Wedson Nyirenda

Malawi giants FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have appointed former Zambia national team coach Wedson Nyirenda as their new head coach on a two-year contract.

The 59-year-old Zambian was officially unveiled in Blantyre on Wednesday, becoming the latest high-profile coach to take charge of Malawi’s most successful football club.

Nyirenda arrives with an extensive coaching résumé built across Southern Africa, having managed clubs in Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa while also serving as head coach of the Zambia national team.

His appointment signals the club’s intent to maintain its status as one of the region’s leading sides, with Nyasa Big Bullets looking to add to a trophy cabinet that includes a record 17 league titles.

During a coaching career spanning more than two decades, Nyirenda has enjoyed success with several clubs, winning back-to-back league titles with ZESCO United and guiding Zanaco to a Zambian league championship. He also led Mozambique’s Ferroviário da Beira to a historic league triumph and collected domestic cup honours with Lusaka Dynamos.

At international level, Nyirenda took charge of Zambia during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign and has earned a reputation for developing players and building competitive teams.

Club president Konrad Buckle described the appointment as a significant step in the club’s ambitions.

“Wedson is a coach with a proven track record and a wealth of experience gained at some of the biggest clubs in the region,” Buckle said.

“The board and management have worked diligently throughout this process, and we have full confidence in the decision that has been made. We believe he has the qualities, leadership and expertise to make a real difference at FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.”

Nyirenda said the club’s rich history and tradition of success were key factors in his decision to accept the role.

“I am very excited and delighted to be in Malawi, especially because I have been appointed head coach of the country’s biggest club,” he said.

“FCB Nyasa Big Bullets is a club with a remarkable history. Winning the league championship 17 times is a huge achievement and tells you everything about the stature of this football club.

“When you look at that record, you understand the expectations, the tradition and the ambition that come with the job. That is one of the reasons I was so interested in coming here and becoming part of this great club.”

The CAF Pro Licence holder is expected to begin work once the club completes the necessary administrative processes.

For Nyasa Big Bullets, the appointment represents the arrival of one of Southern Africa’s most decorated coaches, while for Nyirenda it offers another opportunity to add to a career already marked by domestic success and continental experience.
