Gamphani Lungu Joins Orlando Pirates as Champions Strengthen Squad

By Aaron Mubanga Jnr

Zambian international Gamphani Lungu has completed a move to South African Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates from Siwelele FC, the Buccaneers have confirmed.

Pirates announced Lungu’s arrival alongside fellow Siwelele midfielder Bohale Ngwato, while Mthetheleli Mthiyane joins from Stellenbosch FC and Sbangani Zulu arrives from Richards Bay FC.

In a statement, Pirates said: “Recently crowned Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates are delighted to announce new arrivals to the club.”

The club also confirmed that defender Thabiso Lebitso will move to Stellenbosch as part of a swap deal involving Mthiyane.

Lungu’s transfer marks the latest chapter in a successful spell in South African football. The versatile midfielder joined SuperSport United from Power Dynamos in August 2018 and established himself as one of the club’s most dependable performers under a succession of coaches.

He remained with the side following its rebranding to Siwelele FC ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Since arriving in South Africa, the 27-year-old has made 212 appearances across all competitions, scoring 29 goals and providing 25 assists.

The announcement comes as Pirates continue a significant squad reshaping ahead of the new campaign. The club confirmed that Bandile Shandu, Sipho Mbule, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Karim Kimvuidi and Deivi Miguel Vieira will leave when their contracts expire.

“Each of the players departs having contributed to the Orlando Pirates journey in their own way, and the club would like to place on record its appreciation for their service during their time with the Buccaneers,” Pirates said.

For Lungu, the move offers an opportunity to compete for major honours with one of Africa’s most storied clubs as Pirates look to build on their domestic success and strengthen their challenge on the continental stage.
