Time for Klings Kangwa to step up

The Zambia National Team will take on Ivory Coast on Saturday at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in the penultimate round of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

Coach Avram Grant has been fine tuning the team for the last two plus weeks.

The Copper Bullets need a point to secure qualification for their first AFCON tournament since 2015.

Grant must have already come up with combinations for this much following the training camp in South Africa and the last three days in Zambia.

With Enock Mwepu medically retired, another midfielder needs to step up and take up the creator in chief role on the team.

Serbia based Klings Kangwa is the man to take up that role as he has already shown some flashes of brilliance.

In the Serbian Superliga he has been playing well and Kangwa has since attracted interest from French Ligue 1 side Montpelier.

According to statistical platform Instat Klings Kangwa was the second best midfielder in Serbia after teammate Gelor Kanga as of 22nd December.

During his last season in Russia, 2021/2022 Kangwa became the first foreign player to win the Arsenal Tula player of the season award in five years.

The statistics to back his prowess are there but he will now need to take charge at the National team as  the main man.

He has been involved in 18 goals (12 goals and 6 assists) in all Competitions for Red Star Belgrade enroute to winning the League and Cup double plus qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

In June last year the Happy Hearts product scored a superb free-kick in the 88th minute to see the Chipolopolo Boys claim all 3 points and ensure the team ended match-day 2 of the AFCON qualifiers with a 2-1 win.

The victory was Zambia’s first competitive win under former boss, Croatian trainer Aljoša Asanović, putting behind the 3-1 defeat suffered to Cote d’Ivoire in the opening qualifying fixture.

The former Buildcon player can decide a game if he comes to the party and tomorrow Zambia needs him to bring his A game.

His creativity and bag of tricks could be the key to unlocking the Ivory Coast defence and creating chances for the likes of Fashion Sakala Jnr and Patson Daka.

The Chipolopolo square off with the Elephants of Ivory Coast at 15:00 hrs at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
