Power Dynamos, ZESCO United Secure CAF Cash Boost Despite Continental Exit

Zambian champions Power Dynamos and ZESCO United may have bowed out of continental competition, but both clubs will take home significant prize money following their respective CAF campaigns.

Power Dynamos concluded their CAF Champions League journey after finishing third in Group A, recording two wins and a draw. The Kitwe giants ended behind Morocco’s RS Berkane and Egypt’s Pyramids FC, who sealed the top two places.

A third-place group finish guarantees Power Dynamos a payout of USD 700,000—approximately K12.8 million—providing a major financial boost despite missing out on the knockout stages.

ZESCO United bow out but bank group-stage reward

Meanwhile, ZESCO United exited the CAF Confederation Cup at the group stage after a difficult campaign in Group D. The Ndola-based side managed just one win from six matches, finishing bottom of the group.

Al Masry and Zamalek SC progressed to the next round, while South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs narrowly missed out despite finishing level on 10 points with Al Masry, losing out on goal difference.

For their participation, ZESCO United will pocket USD 400,000—approximately K7.3 million—the standard reward for teams finishing fourth in the Confederation Cup group stage.

Missed millions, but vital income

While both clubs will welcome the financial injection, their early exits come at a cost. Progressing deeper into the competitions could have more than doubled their earnings, with CAF prize money increasing sharply from the quarter-final stage onwards.

For Power Dynamos and ZESCO United, the funds now offer an opportunity to stabilise finances, invest in squad strengthening, and prepare for domestic and future continental challenges—underscoring how CAF competitions remain both a sporting and financial lifeline for African clubs.
