Derby Defeat and Armed Robbery Shock Mufulira Wanderers

A Copperbelt derby between Mufulira Wanderers and Nchanga Rangers was overshadowed by an armed robbery at the Wanderers’ secretariat shortly after Sunday’s match.

On the pitch at Shinde Stadium, Nchanga Rangers edged their hosts 1-0 to claim local bragging rights in a tightly contested encounter.

Joseph Musonda struck the decisive goal in the 56th minute, finishing calmly to hand Rangers a crucial three points and lift them to 34 points on the table. The result restores momentum for Nchanga after a difficult run of form, while Wanderers were left frustrated after failing to capitalise on home advantage.

Armed men steal match takings

Hours after the final whistle, Wanderers confirmed that armed robbers attacked the club secretariat at around 18:00 local time.

In a statement signed by club president George Katongo, the club said staff members were held at gunpoint and K181,000 (approximately $9800) — money realised from gate takings — was stolen.

The attackers also hijacked a Toyota Harrier belonging to the club’s logistics manager, Patrick Mwanza. The vehicle was reportedly due to transport the cash to Mopani Security for safekeeping.

Gunshots were fired during the incident to disperse people nearby before the suspects fled.

The Zambia Police Service said a manhunt was launched immediately. The vehicle was later recovered after being abandoned, but the suspects escaped with the cash.

Wanderers said they are cooperating fully with police and are reviewing security arrangements.

The incident casts a shadow over one of Zambia’s fiercest football rivalries, turning what should have been a derby decided by a single goal into a night of wider concern for the club and its supporters.
