Copper Queens defender Margaret Belemu says the Algeria friendlies will be a good test ahead of the WAFCON.
Speaking during Wednesday’s training session at the University of Lusaka, Belemu said the team’s prime target was world cup qualification.
“Our main objective is to go and qualify for the World Cup and also challenge to win the WAFCON title,” she said.
“I think the two friendlies (Algeria) will give us an idea on how Egypt plays because they have the same style of play. So, it’s a good friendly that will help gauge ourselves on how we are playing as a team.”
Belemu said Group C which has defending champions Nigeria, Malawi and Egypt was tough.
“It is a very tough group. We all know how Nigeria plays, also Malawi is a good side and Egypt is a good team. We are not underrating any team,” he says.
“We had a tough game against Nigeria at the last edition, so I think we have a lot of things to work on as team. They should expect a tough game from us this time.”
The Copper Queens have commenced WAFCON preparations in Lusaka before heading to Algeria for the pre-tournament camp where they will play two friendly matches.
Zambia will open its WAFCON account on 28 July before facing Nigeria four days later.
The final group game will be against the scorchers of Malawi on 5 August with top teams making it to the quarterfinals.
Top four teams at the WAFCON will qualify for the Brazil 2027 FIFA World Cup.
