Mwape Mwelwa retires from football

Zambia Super League Champions, ZESCO United has confirmed that Midfielder Mwape Mwelwa has hung up his boots.

Mwelwa nicknamed Tozizi has had a successful career spanning over 17 years with the last eight spent at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium winning titles with Zega Mambo.

“ZESCO United diminutive midfielder, Mwape Mwelwa has retired from the game having spent over 8-years at the club.

Mwelwa was among the few remaining old knights at ZESCO United who contributed immensely to the rise of the club from its ashes to become the country’s dominant force in the game.”

ZESCO United Chief Executive Officer, Richard Kabwe Mulenga has described Mwelwa as a true servant of the club.

“He has been a special, loyal servant of this football club. Mwelwa sits in the same class as Jacob Banda and Kondwani Mtonga; veterans who have been instrumental in the growth of the club. We will forever be grateful for what he did here and what we achieved together,” Mulenga told the club’s official website.

The 36-year-old midfielder joins the likes of Kondwani Mtonga and Jacob Banda who hang up their boots during last season’s league campaign.

Mwelwa also played for Chiparamba, National Assembly, City of Lusaka, and Red Arrows before his near-decade stay at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
