The Fans’ Perspective: Lessons from Cosafa and Micho

1. Our Players have failed to demonstrate character and passion in their play something which should be inspired or built by the technical team.

2. Old players don’t seem to improve and have passed their prime. Kennedy Mweene could hardly kick the ball beyond the center circle and his quick dexterity is gone. Kabaso Chongo can’t improve and play beyond that performance.

3. There has never been consistency with team selection since MICHO came. He seems to develop different agendas with each game that comes. You can not consolidate anything from the team that played friendly with Sudan and the Cosafa one

4. MICHO has failed to make a solid team from whatever number of players and matches he has handled, and there is no assurance he will going forward. Coaches like Wedson Nyirenda and Herve Renard within a short space identified players who could make it and began molding a team steadily. MICHO has been taking us back and forth. Called Kabaso Chongo for first friendlies and saw he couldn’t perform. Because of public pressure called him again, we saw the Algeria disappointment, and here again, Kabaso has failed. Players who have been tested and failed like Adrian Chama, Salulani Phiri, Paul Katema are in and out favorites while Potentially good players like Spencer Sautu, Isaac Shamujompa who should by now have cemented a National team place, are always on the sidelines.

5. MICHO talks too much but hardly walks the talk.

6. Finally MICHO has failed given the time, players, money he has been accessed with, we deserve good results. Time is gone but continuing with MICHO in the world cup qualifiers is riskier than getting back Wedson Nyirenda who worked with that team and quickly adapts and knows how to make a team. It took Ian Poulsen 3months to rebuild the Zambia National Soccer Team after the 1993 Air crash, and this team went on to reach the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 94 with Ian Porterfield a coach who quickly adapted too.

7. A Positive from MICHO he knows how to identify good players and has been all-inclusive of almost all players we would wish, but he doesn’t know how to make a winning team. He is good for a long-term project or youth talent identification. Suggestion to Football Association of Zambia (FAZ ) maybe employ him as Technical director or grassroots football co-ordinator whatever, just change a bit of his contract…then Bring in Wedson Nyirenda, we can only deal with a coach who has been with the team not long ago and knows most of the players, or if it’s bringing someone new, a good coach who adapts quickly.

  1. I disagree with the writer on the second point were you say KM16 was even failing to kick the ball to the center, am gonna ask you…are you sure that you watched the games he played in?
And for Kabaso I completely agree with you no question about it. Cause he plays as if he’s lost not knowing where he is.
7th point of offering Micho as a TD? That’s a very big NO, the man has failed in the position he applied for, then what will make him succeed in a position that he’s gonna be forced into?
Let the man pack his bags and leave, in the number of matches that he has handled it has clearly shown that the man has no idea on what he’s doing. Instead of the team to be improving and getting to get her it’s been dismantled.

  2. Micho has failed. Let micho leave our team. I know him since he was coaching Yanga of Tanzania.
Fwaeni coach umbi mwe, bola ya Zambia yayapashi umulandu wa Micho. It’s a big NO for Micho.

  3. That’s a good analysis. Hiring a new coach will just take us back to stage one. Wada Wada can make a good combination with Micho. Bring Wada as coach and Micho as technical adviser..

  4. The big question is what does the contract states ? Is it based on performance ? Otherwise Faz will pay through the noise if the fire him

    • Can we afford to Fire him. With two month to go for world cup qualifiers, would that be a prudent decision ( ask ba NAPSA about such decisons ) lets just keep him, his contract runs until December, then we can get another coach. We gongered ourselves on this one, trust me, eve n i believed when he was hired.

  5. Let me be candid about Mweene. Yes he was good goal minder when he was young especially on stopping penalties But he has had height disadvantage more so when it comes to punching balls from Corners he doesn’t look confident . He is grown older obviously reflexes won’t be at their best. I guess that is the more reason he has been no. 2 goal keeper at Sundowns SA. In any case the man has done his part. We need to find a young goalkeeper with a good height and skilful. I was hoping Micho will develop one of young ones but Micho is not a developer

  6. Please attach Wada as an Assistant Coach to Micho because the time is too short to fire Micho, we can’t take a risk of rebuilding within 2 months. Chiyangi is also great with defense, Please FAZ just attach a good combination of coaches to Micho as a technical team for the sake of Mother Zambia. This is not the time to be proud but a time to be tacticians in the Boardroom.

  7. Further, I do not agree on Mweene’s case He is still a great goalkeeper better than all the young ones all he needs is a solid and commanding defense. Sunzu is still a better defender than most of the Boys even Kabaso Chongo, Mwape Musonda is also a great finisher than most of the Boys. Lastly, Wada is great on team selection and Chiyangi is better on tactical discipline. I watched Chipolopolo they were losing their form most often and that is what cost them losing especially to small teams.

  8. The plays have failed to perform their duties, their the one on the pitch not micho,is only the advisor.micho can not tell astricker how to score coz it’s arole of astricker to apply tricks according to proffesion. for mid-fielders yes so that they control mid-field

  9. The worst mistake the Zambian FA ever made was not to build on that U20 team all the way through proper guidance and engagement with the respective teams they represented at the time prioritising their development for the future. Those guys cliques as a team and with proper guidance, right now they would have matured into a very solid team…German did the same post 2002 and Belgium used the same blue bring to build their current team. But then it’s Zambia..you develop on your own as a player not as a team. I’m glad Payson, Enock and Mwepu made it out before their careers got messed up by the system

  10. badly written article riddled with emotion. you think wada can take us to the world cup, honestly. On Mweene I cannot agree. There wasn’t much of a challenge put to him during cosafa so we cannot judge him. to me he looked comfortable as is typical with veteran keepers. all is well with mweene. You cannot say Micho must go becuase he is good for long term. That very long term is what we need. we havent been to afcon in 6 years. therefore this is already a long term approach. Micho is a good coach once he hits his stride. I watched Pirates play under Micho, they played the most exquisite kind of football. No local coach can coach Pirates or Zamalek

  11. I think FAZ would making the same error if they fire current coach. Same thing has been happening….
    Wedson fired /pushed – rebuild
Sven fired- rebuild/ back to drawing board
Aggrey Chiyangi- fired-/back to drawing board / rebuild again

Coach Micho can see what he is trying in his tactics .Try not concede 1st half attack 2nd half.
    Seems sound and reasonable.
Its just that players are always in new combinations at the back especially.

In reality Qatar 2022 unlikely qualification and only a step forward in the rebuild process

    SO FAZ keep coach .

  12. I agree with you ROALD Poulsen and Ian Potterfield did a lot in the given short period of time to rebuild the national team after the 1993 disaster. I don’t know about the current staff, though!

  13. Zambian fans talk too much. I guess because we are the biggest stake holders in the game. Sometimes we talk without even analysing facts in front of us.
I watched the last game Zambia vs Salbe in an almost empty stadium and you could hear all what was being said mu ground. Mweene was almost directing outfield players from the posts. Even telling them bweleni uyo goalle alapanta ifitali sana. He was mostly using Bemba and Nyanja. He was guiding them so well and one could see why you need one or two old guards in the team.
The one who replaced him was busy urging the players to put more pressure usinh English which the Salbeans could also hear.
What has messed up Mweene’s game is lack of game time at Mamelodi.

I always keep wondering why people keep saying Potterfield rebuilt the Zamban National Team. No. For a start, a lot of countries (France and Denmark, etc) were involved. Ba Fred Mwila and Dr Fumanchu were very instrumental in the transformation of the Chipolopolo. Theu deserve better than Ian. Unless one was not aware of whay was going on. Half of the time ba Mwila and ba Simutowe were drilling the lads, Potterfield was sleeping at the Hotel.
I was also thinking, that the team coming into maturity now is the all conquering former U 20. We should think of building a team around the PD’s; FS”s; and, the Computer’s of today.
Lope in three Sabobo’s of this world (for future continuity), add on one or two of the old guard for stability bring back Chambeshi and Numba Mumamba and we move on.
Sometimes abaiche aba bafwaya coach uwakulanda nabo mwa Silozi, mu Chitonga nangu mu Chikaluvale.

    We are Chipolopolo.
