Zesco United edged Power Dynamos 1-0 in a fiercely contested second-day fixture of the four-team pre-season tournament, with new signing Kennedy Musonda scoring the decisive goal five minutes from time.
The match at Arthur Davies Stadium was a physical and tactical affair, with both sides reduced to 10 men in the first half. Power Dynamos midfielder Amin Haiva was sent off before Zesco defender Kabaso Chongo also received his marching orders.
Despite the defeat, Power Dynamos coach Oswald Mutapa was encouraged by his side’s performance, although he admitted they needed to create more chances.
“I’m not disappointed with the performance. I feel we handled the game very well, apart from less creating of chances.”
Mutapa was particularly pleased with his team’s possession, movement and decision-making, but conceded that they switched off in the closing stages to allow Musonda to settle the contest.
He also welcomed the intensity of the match, saying Power Dynamos approached the friendly with the same desire to win that they would take into competitive fixtures.
Power Dynamos are preparing for their CAF Champions League campaign, and Mutapa believes his squad will be ready when competitive action begins.
He added that the club’s new signings are gradually settling into the team, although players arriving from outside Zambia require more time to adapt.
For Zesco United coach Mwenya Chipepo, the victory provided another positive step as he continues to shape the team following his appointment.
Chipepo said beating the reigning Zambian champions was significant, even in a pre-season fixture.
“I’m very happy. You know, to win is good, whether you have played well or not. Power Dynamos is a great side and we didn’t expect an easy game.”
Musonda produced the decisive moment in the 85th minute, but Chipepo says the forward still needs to improve his fitness.
“If you look at his fitness level, it’s not to where it’s supposed to be today, but we work on him. He has started improving, so expect something very soon.”
Chipepo also identified rebuilding unity and discipline within the squad as one of his key priorities since taking charge.
“What was missing was unity and love. You know, this is Zesco United, so if you are not united, you can’t perform well.”
The victory gives Zesco United further encouragement ahead of the new season, while Power Dynamos continue their preparations for domestic and continental competition.
The tournament concludes on Saturday, 22 August, at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium. Power Dynamos will face AS Simba at 15:00, while Red Arrows are scheduled to play the early fixture at 13:00.
