A Saturday defined by fine margins and decisive moments breathed life into Week 16 of the MTN Super League, as Nkana, Red Arrows, Green Buffaloes and Kansanshi Dynamos all ground out important victories in a round that underlined both the intensity of the title chase and the desperation of the relegation battle.
Goals were at a premium across the country, but where they came, they mattered.
At Nkoloma Stadium, Red Arrows produced the statement result of the day, edging Mufulira Wanderers 1–0 to end a two-game losing streak and, perhaps more significantly, secure their first win over the once-dominant Wanderers since 2019. Angel Lubamba’s 36th-minute header proved decisive, the forward finishing off a slick passing move after Ackim Mumba’s clever dummy freed Alassane Diarra to deliver the cross.
The victory lifts the Airmen to 34 points, just one behind log leaders Power Dynamos, and keeps them firmly in the title conversation as the season edges towards its decisive phase.
Elsewhere, Green Buffaloes climbed to 10th place with a hard-fought 2–1 win over FC Leopards, inspired by a clinical brace from Christopher Kumwembe. The forward struck either side of the break, scoring in the 39th and 72nd minutes, to cancel out Roderick Khembo’s 62nd-minute penalty.
For FC Leopards, the defeat compounds their struggles at the bottom end of the table. Sitting 16th, they also endured a losing start under new head coach Sunday Sichimata, who took charge earlier in the week following the dismissal of Justin Chinama.
Kansanshi Dynamos continued their upward momentum in Solwezi, making it two wins in a row with a narrow 1–0 victory over Nkwazi. Kalonji Mwepu’s early strike in the seventh minute was enough to secure maximum points for the Mabanga Boys, lifting them to 17 points. Nkwazi, meanwhile, slipped into the relegation zone, the pressure mounting as the season reaches its midpoint.
In Mazabuka, Nkana delivered a timely reminder of their resilience, snatching a dramatic 1–0 away win over FC MUZA thanks to Nduna Zulu’s 88th-minute strike. The late goal hauled the 13-time champions out of the relegation places and up to 14th on 16 points, offering a crucial boost in their fight for survival.
The day’s remaining fixtures reflected the broader theme of caution and congestion in the table. Bottom-placed Mines United and Mutondo Stars shared a goalless draw, as did NAPSA Stars and Konkola Blades, with the Pensioners missing the chance to register a third straight win. Nchanga Rangers and ZANACO also cancelled each other out in another stalemate.
As Week 16 unfolds, the picture is becoming clearer at both ends of the table. Red Arrows are breathing down the necks of the leaders, confidence restored, while victories for Nkana and Kansanshi Dynamos have reshuffled the relegation fight once more.
In a league where a single goal can swing momentum and fortunes, Saturday served as a reminder that the MTN Super League remains a battle of nerve, precision and timing — and the margins are getting finer by the week.
