Martin Phiri hits a brace to propel Zanaco to victory

Martin Phiri scored a goal in each half to help Zanaco to a 3-0 win over Gambian Air Force in the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary stage.

Coach Numba Mumamba went for the old fashioned 4-4-2 partnering Phiri with Congolese forward Maisha Chavda upfront while Ernest Mbewe and Charles Zulu were deployed on the flanks.

The midfield was anchored by the impressive Boyd Musonda with Zimbabwean Tafadza Rusike as the playmaker.

The game started with Zanaco enjoying more possession as Rusike dictated play.

The first 10 minutes was the ‘Rusike show’ has he combined simple and long range passing.

Despite that it was the West Africans, who had the first shot on target but it was dealt by Toaster Nsabata.

Thereafter Zulu grew in confidence and took over from Rusike. The 22 year old saw his shot parried off the bar by the goalkeeper before Maisha missed narrowly.

With the home crowd growing impatience, captain Ziyo Tembo put the bankers 1-0 up off a Rusike corner a minute after the half hour mark.
