Power Dynamos physical trainer Billy Mwanza says the newly crowned MTN Super League champions have already moved on from their ABSA Cup final defeat and are now focused on finishing the season with a record points tally.
Power return to league action on Wednesday against Mutondo Stars at Arthur Davies Stadium, looking to continue a dominant domestic campaign despite last weekend’s 2-0 loss to Red Arrows in the ABSA Cup final.
“We played the final and we are still champions,” Mwanza said ahead of the match. “We won the league before the season ended, and everyone understands that the ABSA Cup result was just one of those games.”
Power Dynamos secured the league title after a 2-1 victory over Konkola Blades in Chililabombwe. They followed that triumph with a goalless draw against Kansanshi Dynamos before suffering defeat in the cup final.
Despite already sealing the championship, Mwanza insisted the club’s ambitions remain high as they chase a new benchmark points total.
“Last season we finished with 68 points. This season we are already on 71, so our objective is to go further,” he said. “We want to break the record.”
Mwanza also praised the depth and mentality within the squad as the season approaches its conclusion.
“We have a lot of players and everybody is training at the same level. Everyone is ready for tomorrow’s game,” he added. “We encouraged the boys after the final and everyone is equal to the task.”
The fitness coach confirmed that the league leaders have almost a full squad available, with only Jackson sidelined through injury.
Power will, however, face a determined Mutondo Stars side desperate for survival. The Evergreen outfit sit 15th on the table with 31 points and remain inside the relegation zone.
Mutondo head into the fixture buoyed by a morale-boosting 1-0 victory over Red Arrows, ending an eight-match winless run and handing them renewed belief in their fight to avoid relegation.
History, though, favours the champions. Power Dynamos won the reverse fixture 2-0 and have claimed victory in each of the last five meetings between the two sides.
Kick-off at Arthur Davies Stadium is scheduled for 15:00 CAT, with Mwanza urging supporters to rally behind the champions.
“They should come in numbers,” he said. “The fans are our 12th player and we need their support.”
