Green Eagles head coach Perry Mutapa says his side have raised their ambitions ahead of a crucial Super League meeting with ZESCO United, as they push for a top finish following a dramatic turnaround season.
Eagles host Zesco in a rescheduled Week 20 fixture at Independence Stadium on Thursday, with both sides chasing strong positions in the closing stages of the campaign.
Mutapa’s side began the season battling to avoid relegation, but a consistent run of form has lifted them into contention for a place in the top tier of the table.
“We are coming from a season where the team was almost relegated, so the moment we moved past that mark, we had to set new targets,” Mutapa said.
Green Eagles are currently hovering around fourth and fifth place, and the coach believes there is still room to climb higher before the season concludes.
“If we are number four or five, we must set a new target because there is still room to go higher,” he added.
However, preparations for the high-stakes encounter have been disrupted by a growing list of injuries and illness within the squad — a challenge Mutapa says the team has managed quietly while maintaining results.
“We have a lot of injuries and even sickness in the team. It has been a difficult period, though we have managed to perform without talking much about it,” he said.
Despite those setbacks, Mutapa remains confident his players can deliver, and has called on supporters to replicate the energy that has driven recent performances.
“The supporters pushed us last week, and we need the same energy again.”
With momentum on their side and belief growing, Green Eagles now face one of their toughest tests — a meeting with Zesco United that could define just how high they can finish this season.
