The inaugural Women’s national league is set to kick off this Saturday with seven games expected to take place over the weekend.
The Women’s National League was initially scheduled to have 12 teams but there has been a late inclusion of two teams, National Assembly and ZISD hence will now have 14 teams.
Newly elected National Women’s Representative Col Priscilla Katoba has expressed happiness with the soon to start National League. Col Katoba believes will motivate the girls and bring about Competition.
“I’m very much excited and I can’t wait for Saturday to see the girls in action. Let me take this opportunity to appreciate the stakeholders who are the team owners who have waited this long to see this come to fruition,” he said.
” It is a motivation to the girls and will give them hope to be able to play the game looking for something special at the end of the day. Coming up with the National League is something that will boost their morale and will bring in a lot of competition. With the introduction of the CAF competition, it will make girls battle it out competitively.”
“We need to level the ground even though we don’t reach the men’s side of things in terms of incentives to give girls hope. We also need to come up with some form of awarding system to motivate the girls at the end of the season. We need to award those that have excelled,” she added.
Col Katoba believes the qualification to the Olympics should be sign enough for sponsors to come on board because of the massive talent that the country has on the Women’s side of things.
She went on to advise the players to go out and play the games professionally and follow the fair play rules.
“If the games are aired it will be good for the girls to showcase their talent and we can see more players going out to play in Europe and other areas. The girls have shown what they are capable of doing after qualifying to the Olympics and any well-wisher should be able to see from this that they are good enough to deserve support,” he said.
“Women are determined and without hindrances and full support they will show up and raise their hands to be counted.”
“My word to the girls is that let’s start with a bang. Let’s show what we have to our country so that people will not have doubts that we have talent. I just want to wish those traveling out of their towns a safe trip. Let’s play professionally and follow their fair play rules,” she added.
Favorites Green Buffaloes will start their campaign away to Zesco United Ladies at Trade Fair Grounds on Saturday while Indeni Roses lock horns with exciting Bauleni United Sports Academy (BUSA).
Elsewhere, Queens Academy welcomes Red Arrows at Jasmine grounds as Nkwazi Queens square off with Lusaka Dynamos in a Lusaka derby.
