Green Buffaloes Women became the first team to successfully defend the Carling Black Label “Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu” Women’s Charity Shield after defeating Zesco Ndola Girls at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Sunday.
The 2025 edition of the Charity Shield featured an expanded two-day format. On Day Two, the highly anticipated clash brought together 2024/25 Eden University Women’s Super League champions Zesco Ndola Girls and runners-up Green Buffaloes Women in a battle for supremacy in women’s football.
A brace from Hellen Chanda and a goal from Evarine Susan Katongo secured a thrilling 3-2 victory for Charles Haalubono’s side. The win not only extended Buffaloes’ record to two consecutive Charity Shield titles but also ended Zesco Ndola Girls’ remarkable 34-match unbeaten run.
The Lusaka-based side has now won every edition of the Women’s Charity Shield since its inception, lifting the inaugural trophy in 2024 and the expanded edition in 2025.
Speaking after the match, head coach Charles Haalubono expressed his delight at starting the season with silverware.
“We are happy with the victory. We knew it would not be an easy game, Zesco gave us a tough challenge, but our preparations for the season paid off today,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zesco Ndola Girls head coach William Zulu commended the Buffaloes for their performance.
“We will take the lessons from this game into the COSAFA Qualifiers and use them to our advantage. Green Buffaloes play a similar style to Sundowns, which gave us a clear picture of what to expect,” Zulu said.
Haalubono also congratulated Zesco Ndola Girls on their Super League triumph and wished them the best as they represent Zambia in the CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifiers.
