Power Dynamos set for Rwanda trip ahead of Al Merrikh Champions League tie

Zambian champions Power Dynamos are set to depart for Rwanda this morning as they begin preparations for their CAF Champions League first preliminary round tie against Sudanese giants Al Merrikh.

The Kitwe side is scheduled to leave Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka at 11:00 hours aboard Proflight to Johannesburg, South Africa.

From OR Tambo International Airport, Power Dynamos will connect to Kigali aboard RwandAir.

The first leg against Al Merrikh will be played in Rwanda, with Power Dynamos hosting the return fixture between 11 and 13 September.

The winner over the two legs will advance to the second preliminary round, where they will face either Algeria’s JS Saoura or Guinea’s Horoya AC.

The winner of that tie will secure a place in the CAF Champions League group stage.

Abayellow head into the competition as back-to-back MTN Super League champions, having won the 2025/26 title with 78 points from 34 matches. It was their ninth league title and extended their run of domestic success.

They will also be looking to build on the club’s historic achievement last season, when they reached the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time.

Power Dynamos remain the only Zambian club to have won a major CAF men’s club competition, having lifted the CAF Cup Winners’ Cup in 1991.

The Kitwe giants will now hope to draw on that continental pedigree as they begin another Champions League campaign with a place in the group stage their ultimate target.
