Zambian utility player Gamphani Lungu continued his impressive start to the season by scoring as Orlando Pirates beat Sekhukhune United 3-0 to reach the MTN8 final.
Lungu struck six minutes before half-time to double Pirates’ lead and help the Buccaneers complete a 4-0 aggregate victory after winning the first leg 1-0.
The goal was Lungu’s third in all competitions this season, underlining his growing influence in an Orlando Pirates side that has once again reached the final of South Africa’s traditional season-opening cup competition.
Pirates had to work hard for the breakthrough, but Thapelo Mokobodi finally opened the scoring in the 36th minute after Yanela Mbuthuma’s pace created the opportunity.
Lungu then doubled the advantage before the interval.
Mbuthuma collected a pass from Oswin Appollis before finding Lungu, who still had work to do but kept his composure to fire past the Sekhukhune defence and put Pirates firmly in control.
The Zambian started the second half brightly too, forcing a save from a tight angle as Pirates looked to put the tie beyond doubt.
Sekhukhune pushed forward after the break and tested the home defence, but Pirates held firm before Kamogelo Sebelebele added a third in the closing stages to seal a 4-0 aggregate victory.
The result sends Pirates into the MTN8 final for a record fifth consecutive time, extending their remarkable run in the competition.
They will face either Mamelodi Sundowns or Lamontville Golden Arrows in the final, with the second semi-final to be decided on Sunday.
For Lungu, meanwhile, the latest goal adds further momentum to what is shaping up to be a productive campaign in the colours of the Buccaneers.
