Government pays off Bonneti

Italian Dario Bonetti has been paid his US$382,000, a situation which ends the long-running impasse between the ex Chipolopolo coach and the Football Association of Zambia.

Government has however told FAZ to pay off what is owed to Ivory Coast assistant trainer Patrice Beaumelle, another ex-Zambia coach who is owed about six months wages believed to be about US$180,000.

Sports Minister Vincent Mwale told Parliament Thursday afternoon and stressed that the Italian was never selected by the national soccer governing body but only imposed on the association by government.

The Italian, who had written FIFA demanding about US$1million for what he claimed was wrongful dismissal in 2011, had his claim cut down by the world soccer governing body after FAZ filed counter-papers stating reasons for his departure.

Mwale said it was important for government to pay off Bonetti to ensure Zambia did not risk any sanctions from FIFA. He said other coaches owed would be paid by FAZ.

Said Mwale: “Paying Bonetti wasn’t priority; that’s why we took time to find money to pay.”

“We also owe Patrice Beaumelle. Instead of Government coming in to pay Beaumelle, FAZ has been asked to pay him. This is the sanction we have imposed on FAZ,” Mwale said.

Pressed to reveal which individual imposed Bonetti on FAZ, Mwale said: “According to FAZ, government, hired the coach; government acted as government and I don’t think we have to single out any individuals. Government acted as government,” Mwale said adding: “Mr Speaker, I did indicate that FAZ did complain that government presented to them a coach but FAZ didn’t tell us who in government.”

  1. When Kalu is out, I wouldn’t mind donatiing some dollars to FAZ to help out with finances, but currently I would not give in a dime to help Kalu live large in SA when the players, coaches are not being paid for their sweat. If they(players) ask for what they deserve, they get kicked off the team as seen with the women team that recently got disbanded. Kalu is a disgrace to his legacy he built as a players.

  2. Now that FAZ has been bailed out, the least we can expect from them is transparency in dealing with such matters. I know this a big ask of them but they need to clean up their act. Many well meaning sponsors stay away from FAZ because of shady dealings at football house.

  3. Very true, infact those are the facts, kalu is very corrupt and we dont just hate him as a person but his wayz of dealing things is questionable.one cant tell from a very far distance that thingz are not ok.anyway kulaloleshafye
