In African culture, Owl sightings and calls can either a good sign or a bad omen…when an owl hoots at night it means someone is going to be dead soon.
In the run up to the Zimbabwe Football Association elective Congress on Sunday, an owl hooted. Many were not happy with the way Chiyangwa led ZIFA with an iron fist.
To many in Zimbabwe football circles Chiyangwa was known to be a tyranny, captain fiasco who flashed embargoes or bans to anyone whenever he feels to. In fact, his opponent and the victor Felton Kamambo was fraudulently barred to throw his hat in the ring by the ZIFA electoral committee.
Kamambo was then cleared by the world football governing body FIFA to stand and subsequently beat Chiyangwa in the first round of voting. Sensing an embarrassing defeat in the offing, Chiyangwa who was sure of an outright win before the election day decided to withdraw his candidature ahead of the second round.
And that’s how Zimbabwe football was emancipated. The dawn of new era begun with a new hellsman in Felton Kamambo. Adios to the era of despots.
SIREN BELLS IN ZAMBIA
Chiyangwa was elected in 2016, meaning he has only served a one term as ZIFA President. The only sin for the Zanu-PF lawmaker was to rule ZIFA with an iron fist.
While we can’t say the same with FAZ under the auspices of President Andrew Kamanga, however you don’t need to be a brainier to see that many people are not happy with his regime following back to back failures to qualify for the Africa Cup of nation. Many people want to see Kamanga vacate football house.
That in itself is a proverbial hooting of an owl at night in African culture. When people are not happy domestically, a régime change can easily be in the offing. The events of the past Sunday in Zimbabwe, one of the countries that is joined with Zambia at the hip, should set alarm bells, if not chills down the spine.
Meanwhile, wishing the very best to the four Zambia’s envoys: Zesco United, Nkana, Green Eagles and Green Buffaloes in continental football as they battle for their group stages berths in their respective competitions.
Enjoy the rest of the week and God bless you all.
