CHAN 2018: Zambia in perfect start as they beat Uganda

The Zambia national soccer team has made a bright start to their 2018 CHAN campaign after beating Uganda 3 – 1 to go top of group B.

Goals from debutant Lazarous Kambole, Augustine Mulenga and an own goal scored by Uganda goalie Ochan were enough to give Zambia maximum points in the opening match.

Uganda bossed and controlled the game from the start and could have gone up in the second minute but Toaster Nsabata reacted quickly to block the shot for a corner.

The Chipolopolo started coming into the game after the half hour mark and some good work from impressive Alex Ngonga saw him play Ernest Mbewe into space with a through ball.  Mbewe squared the ball for Kambole with his first tough and the Zesco United attacker made no mistake from close range in the 38th minute.

Two minutes later, Nsibambi Derrick finished off a good move with aplomb after Fackson Kapumbu who had a torrid time at left back was beaten to score with a scissors kick.

The two teams were locked at  one all at the break.

After the restart, Zambia looked better organized and this time it was the goal scorer Kambole who powered his way to the by-line on the right to cut the ball back for Augustine Mulenga who had an easy finish with the goalkeeper beaten in the 63rd minute.

Zambia put the game to bed when a long range free kick from Kapumbu was deflected on the wall and the keeper made a big meal of it to drop the ball across his line for an own goal in the 72nd minute.

The win sees Zambia go on top of the log ahead of Namibia who beat Ivory Coast 1 – 0 on goal difference.

Zambia’s next game is against Ivory Coast on Thursday 18th January.

  1. Ba Zambia nalelo bawina Chipolopolo!
Its high time we command on this tournament. This is our time, Wada congrats together with the team. Next game rest those players with yellow cards we dont want any gamble or introduce them after half hour mark. The trophy is ours.

  2. It was not an impressive display from Zambia and the scoreline is rather flattering, but hey it was a victory so congratulations but I fear for the next coming games.

  3. Everyone knows the problems Chipolopolo had coming into this game, not much of friendlies, arriving late! The fact that they could win this way says a lot about the high calibre of the team. Congrats Chipolopolo congrats coach.
There is now enough time to prepare properly for the next match. Congrats once again

  4. Our team couldn’t coordinate and command the game properly. Otherwise, you shuttered the Ugandans, they thoughts it was the U17 which they beat last year at COSAFA level with their under 20.

Is it true that the whole of zed we can’t find a left back?
The less we say about the right back the better
