Zambia Women’s National team coach Bruce Mwape has set his sights on winning the 2022 COSAFA Women’s Championship.
Mwape who is aware of the high expectations put on the team by the fans following their impressive outing in Morocco believes this is the time for his side to win their first regional showpiece.
Mwape says everyone summoned for national duty is available and has reported for camp except for Anita Mulenga who is nursing an injury.
“So far so good, I can’t complain because all the players we called except for Anita Mulenga who got injured during the COSAFA Women’s Champions League are in. She is the only one missing from the squad we called. She has been given a two weeks rest,” Mwape said.
“After that performance in Morocco there will be a lot of expectations but we also want to do better this time around as compared to last year. This year we are fighting for a gold medal.”
“We have almost all the players that went to Morocco with only a few missing like Grace Chanda, and we want to give time to everyone around,” he added.
Mwape feels the pressure will also spill over to the players but he is confident the team will work hard to win the tournament.
“Even players will now play under pressure because there will be too much expectations from the fans and Football house. We just have to work hard so that we come back with the gold medal,” he said.
The 2022 COSAFA Women’s Championship will take place between August 31st and September 11th in Gqeberha, South Africa.
The Copper Queens will begin their campaign against Namibia on 1 September at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Gqeberha before the penultimate group match against Lesotho on 4 September before wrapping up their Group engagement against Eswatini two days later.
