Fans boo Chipolopolo, Cheer Ethiopia as blunt Zambia is held

The Zambia national soccer team was this afternoon held to a goalless draw by visiting Ethiopia in a friendly match played at Woodlands in Lusaka.

The Chipolopolo team assembled from local players gave the fans all but goals in a lopsided game that saw the visitors fail to make shot on target.

Coach Wedson Nyirenda started with a familiar which did the damage against Swaziland but he clearly missed the services of striker Brian Mwila whose position was taken by Martin Phiri in the starting XI.

Zambia’s first chance fell to Augustine Mulenga when he twisted and turned on the left to find space on the edge but his cracking shot was parried over the bar by the goalkeeper in the 17th minute.

By half time, Justin Shonga had hit the target twice from close range a from a 35 yard free kick with Enerst Mbewe and  Mulenga also coming close.

After the restart Zambia started slow and it was Ethiopia enjoying possession but once Wada Wada had rang the changes which saw Dave Daka, Mike Katiba and Donashano Malama come in for Phiri, Mbewe and Simon Silwimba, the Chipolopolo had renewed impetus and they attacked in waves.

It was Fackson Kapumbu and Augustine Mulenga who were doing the damage on the left flank with the best effort of the half coming off Chingandu whose beautifully struck shot from a rebound was saved by the keeper.

By the 80th minute, the fans who were in full voice through out the game had turned against Chipolopolo as every touch by Ethiopia was cheered while Zambia was booed whenever in possession.

The Ethiopians were enjoying their new found love and were comfortable to just keep possession in their half and see the game out.

Up next is a CHAN qualifier against South Africa on 12th August and Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Algeria later this month.

Both Simon Silwimba and Ernest Mbewe were substituted at Woodlands Stadium

  1. THat is Wada for you….lets get a better Coach, Wada is taking us to no where….a draw with lowly ranked and unknown Ethiopia in African Football is wake up call..Wada may have the exposure but lacks depth and understanding of modern football. Over and above that, he is emotionally immature.

  2. That 00:00 draw is a win for WADA WADA! That’s the best he can do!
He couldn’t read the game & Could not see Midfield was lacking! No supply from midfield to J. SHONGA upfront there. He couldn’t see that Justin Shonga was the only striker ticking! Defence was excellent! Fantastic!
It was a chipante pante type of football ! No Coach no results! No FWAYO NO skill! This Chipante- pante Coach should be shown the door!

  3. Now where are those loud mouthed suckers who were hyping Wada Yesa Yesa ? Just wait ,Bafana Bafana, Algeria are the next to plunge this sinking boat deeper.

  4. Sleepless nights for Wada Nyirenda…swallow pride, have all players selected to sign National Team. Memorandum of Understanding. FAZ must be pushing for this to make Coach job easier. In short the discipline must come first from FAZ with manager input…players must be given warnings but otherwise must not be excluded for first time infractions to represent their Country. A second offense by same player …a suspension…we need the best players to play.
Please bring Jacob Mulenga, Fashion Sakala, Enock Mwepu, Isaac Chansa. Mbola, Perhaps Mayuka…definitely Fwayo Tembo for Algeria game…no more experiments otherwise our experiment with Wada Wada must end.

  5. Kananga plz tell wada wada to call fwayo and chama Chota clatus against south Africa. Otherwise we will be beaten home and away. Then the game against Algeria we need fashion sakala, mwepu, Daka patson , and bring back jocob Mulenga and chamanga to teach the young ones how to score. Swallow your pride. Kalaba,Mbesuma and kalengo are no longer the same and good.

  6. ….If not an expatriate coach, how’s about someone whose got a proven track record like Beston Chambeshi. Champion of COSAFA, AFRICA n a sterling performance at the Worldcup ?? Talking about feeling thirsty whilst standing in water neh. Zim has beaten us home n neutral, 9jah home, Mozambique home ….kaya mwandi, the drawing board is getting tired seeing our face.

  7. ETHIOPIA COACH OUTPLAYED WADE NYIRENDA ! SURELY HE HAS NEVER WON ANY SERIOUS GAME WHETHER AT HOME OR AWAY! INSTEAD HE HAS KEPT ON FIGHTING AGAINST THE PLAYERS & BRING DISORDER IN THE TEAM! TO WIN MATCHES IT TAKES GOOD COORDINATION OF COACH & PLAYERS! THESE FOOTBALLERS PLAY FOR EACH OTHER! WHERE IS COLLINS SIKOMBE JERSEY #14 FOR NAPSA STARS? WHERE IS FWAYO TEMBO #7 FOR LUSAKA DYNAMOS? WHERE IS TRIPLE “CCC “#17 FOR LUSAKA DYNAMOS?
I FEEL THAT I CAN ASK FAZ WHY ALLOWING THIS WADA WADA TO KEEP FIGHTING PLAYERS INSTEAD OF BRINGING THEM TOGETHER & KEEP WINNING THE SERIOUS MATCHES? THE COACH IS THE PROBLEM HERE BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER HEARD OR SEEN A ZAMBIAN PLAYER GOES STRAIGHT TO THE DRESSING ROOM AFTER BEING SUBSTITUTED; PROTESTING! SHOW HIM DOORS!
WE DON’T NEED FOOTPOLITICS WITH PLAYERS! LET’S GIVE THIS JOB TO CHAMBESHI.

  8. Kamanga thinks winning the under 17 and under 20 tournaments with over asge players is the real thing. These guys are clueless

  9. We too late,Orlando Pirates has already hired Micho, Let’s hope Wada will spring up a pleasant surprise against our next two opponents…..but looks like Mt Kilimanjaro especially Algeria. Rebuilding process in progress I guess.

    • 1. Mozambique showed up with a shocker!

      2. Zimbabwe conquered as espected, and

      3. South Africa are at our door step, while we are full of mediocrity! If we keep this WEDSON sigh! Bafana will wire us home & away.

  10. Im really surprised zambia could not beat Ethiopia at home. Ghana wallop this same team 5 nil a month ago, this is an indication that zambia will struggle against Nigeria and Algeria in wc qualifiers
