Mbesuma: I am paid to score goals

Zambia national team striker Collins Mbesuma says he is back in form to help Chipolopolo qualify to its maiden World Cup in 2018. And Mbesuma on Friday scored twice as Mpumulanga Black Aces came from behind to beat Premier Soccer League leaders Bidvest Wits 2-1 in a league match.

The win took Aces level on  30 points with Sundowns, one more than Wits .

The 31-year-older striker, who first made a name at another South African club Kaizer Chiefs in 2005 when he scored a record 35 goals in one season, said his current performance was a result of hard work.

He said it was his dream to be top scorer in the PSL again, hence he was pushing hard to help Aces win more games. The Aces skipper said he would not relent in his quest to win the league for the club.

“I am back in the Zambian national team and I want to win to go to the World Cup. My performances have to be the result of hard work and to repay the faith that Aces have in me. I want to win a cup with Aces. I am fighting hard in every match,” Mbesuma said.

“It is also my dream to be a top scorer again in the PSL. I don’t want to set a target, but I know the 35 goals I scored all those years back is a far bigger target. As a striker, I am paid to score goals and to push myself to always give the team a better chance of winning.”

Mbesuma, who has rebranded himself as King David, has now scored 10 goals and is the PSL’s leading scorer. Bidvest Wits midfielder Daine Klate is in second position with seven. And Mbesuma says his return to the national team was timely and vowed to help George Lwandamina’s side qualify to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.  –

  1. Mbesuma in top form is excellent news for our National Team which is very weak….Mpumalanga must be good to our man. What has changed now? the Mpumalanga weather, his faith, coaching? Pity he spent most of his best years in the doldrums.

  2. ok ok lets not let the success get to our heads and lead us down the road to cockiness. Well done but lets not forget “pride before the fall”.

I really hope you win the golden boot this year.

  3. I like that part “I am paid to score goals”. Thats some good self motivation and good message to the club management. Keep it up buddy.

  4. Zambia can’t qualify to the world cup. After what I saw at the caf under 23 we are not good enough in several aspects. We should be careful we may not even qualify for can 2017. Congo have name pirere lecharnte as coach. This dude is experienced and won afcon with Cameroon in 2000. He is a much better coach than lwandimina so we are in trouble.
