The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) says it is in discussions with the English Football Association over a possible international friendly between the Copper Queens and the Lionesses ahead of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
FAZ president Keith Mweemba confirmed the development during the 2025 FAZ Annual General Meeting held in Ndola on Saturday.
“We are having meetings with them. Even yesterday we had a meeting,” Mweemba told the ZamFoot Crew.
“England are interested in playing against Zambia.”
The proposed fixture would provide a major test for the Copper Queens as they continue preparations for WAFCON in Morocco.
Mweemba also revealed that FAZ is planning to stage a three-nation tournament in Zambia next month, with Kenya women’s national football team and Burkina Faso women’s national football team identified as potential participants.
“Burkina Faso is available and so is Kenya. We want to host it in Zambia,” he said.
The Copper Queens recently featured in the FIFA Series tournament in Brazil as part of their build-up to the continental showpiece.
Zambia suffered defeats to Canada and hosts Brazil before ending the tournament with a draw against South Korea.
At WAFCON, the Copper Queens have been drawn in Group C alongside defending champions Nigeria women’s national football team, regional rivals Malawi women’s national football team and Egypt women’s national football team.
The tournament will run from 26 July to 16 August in Morocco and will also serve as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with four automatic qualification places available for African teams.
