We played better today- Bruce Mwape

Zambia Women’s National Team head coach Bruce Mwape has noted improvement from his team despite losing by a big margin to Spain.

The Copper Queens suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Spain to end their FIFA Women’s World Cup adventure.

Mwape felt his team did better than they did against Japan in their opening game, A match they also lost by a similar margin.

“Our performance today was not that bad despite losing by that margin. Looking at the way we played the last game [against Japan] and the way we played today, I think there was a bit of improvement,” Mwape said.

“We made a few mistakes in the first half where we did not start well, allowing two goals. And in the second half, towards the end, that’s where we also made mistakes. Otherwise, the game was better than the last game against Japan,” he added.

Mwape admitted that playing against some of the best teams in the World is not easy.

The Copper Queens gaffer said his team will improve going forward with the experience of the World and things they have learned from other teams.

He went on to praise La Roja for their ability to isolate Zambian defenders in one-on -one situations.

“Playing the best teams in the World is not easy. We have learned a lot, especially in the two teams we have played against. We have seen how our friends are playing and the tactics they are using. Going forward, we will improve on those tactics,” he said.

“The atmosphere I think has been conducive and we have not experienced any difficulties.”

“They scored five goals, We made mistakes especially in one on one situations, they were able to eliminate our players, that’s one of the strengths they had,” he added.

Spain have underlined their credentials as pre-tournament favourites after becoming one of the first teams to seal qualification for the Women’s World Cup knockout stages with a 5-0 win over Zambia in their second Group C encounter.

Teresa Abelleira opened the scoring on Wednesday while Jennifer Hermoso and Alba Redondo both scored twice to give Spain their second victory, which also assured Japan of last-16 qualification after they beat Costa Rica 2-0 earlier in the day.

Zambia will face Costa Rica on Monday in their final Group C match, a dead rubber as both teams are already out of the World Cup.

  1. What game was he watching? If we played better, the scoreline would have shown. Kamanga, the entire women’s coaching team and that atrocious and cheap Kopa kit all have to go. This is unacceptable and an embarrassment to us as a nation.

  2. Time is up this man is just a cancer & he is now derailing these girls. He needs to leave, his position now.

Clearly, he has just brought negative vibes to the squad… The media attention and his lack of seriousness to just admit that they were not ready for the games given their performances. How can he say the performance was not that bad when the scoreline basically says this team can ship in 15 goals in their world cup debut & that they will right history with that record.

    Time to pack sir.

  3. Played better today! What were you watching man? Played better where? The girls couldn’t hold the ball for a minute without giving up possession.

& your coach says we did better today & yet the score sheet screams “Same Difference.”

  4. It’s a shame for this country. A coach accused by his players of sexually abusing is allowed to keep coaching them. He should be suspended the time a serious is being conducted.

This is all a effing joke. The well-being of these girls is way more important than these silly football games.

  5. It’s time to GO. Thank you for the service. FAZ did well to prepare the team but the Coach was playing key players 90 minutes in 3 consecutive friendly games. No tactics, can’t read the game on the bench.
