Morocco v Zambia, 08 January 1989
Competition: FIFA World Cup Africa 2nd round D
Venue: RABAT
Attendance: 20,000
Standing: Wisdon Chansa, Lucky Msiska, Kalusha Bwalya George Lwandamina, Charles Musonda, Stone Nyirenda
Squatting: Derby Makinka, Efford Chabala, John Soko, Ashios Melu, and Whiteson Changwe.
This is the game Zambia lost 1 – 0 away to Morocco in a World Cup qualifying match.
The picture could easily be mistaken for the team that played at the CAN 1990 but the defining factor is the presence of George Lwandamina in the starting line-up.
Lwandamina Partnered Ashios Melu in central defence.
Zambia conceded in the 39th minute when striker Fes Fettah’s low shot beat Efford Chabala in goal.
Linos Makwaza came off the bench to replace Stone Nyirenda while Gibby Mbaseka replaced Lucky Msiska.
The coach at this time was Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu.
Uncle Bobs Commented –
ont think so, as this should’ve been a 1990 World Cup qualifier away match in some Arab country. We lost our final match to Tunisia 1-0 where we needed a draw. If i remember very well, there was an outcry on Zoom having used not so good George Lwandamina at the expense of the mercurial Eston “Yellowman” Mulenga. One thing for sure is this wasn’t against Tunisia as I remember Great Kalu didnt pitch up for that match. Tunisia featured the deadly Limaam. This may have been against Morocco away if I am not mistaken. And if i remember very well, these were donated jerseys from South Korea (Blue, Yellow and White sets)
Jerry a football historian added –
Even if Zambia had won this game, they would have been docked points for breaching FIFA rules by wearing jerseys with a company logo. Morocco avoided the FIFA action by winning 1-0 and the result stood.

That is a nice jersey
Thanks for those who recognized the players, but on Sunday post same picture above and next to starting lineup of this Saturday. Someone will cry….

Sitting from left to right…Derby Makinka, Efford Chabala, john Soko, Ashios Melu and Whiteson Changwe.
Spot on tata!
I didn’t even know Lwandamina played in national team. I remember everybody else. For which club did Lwandamina play?
“Mighty”
Even if Zambia had won this they would have been docked points for wearing jerseys with a company logo which is against FIFA rules
I recall 1989 World Cup qualifiers. At Independence Stadium, Zambia beat Morocco 2.1 with goals by Kalusha and Charles Musonda’. Next Tunisia fell 1.0 via Derby Makinka thunderbolt. Then 4 2 win against Congo Dr. Stone Nyirenda Lucky Msiska, Derby Makinka and Kalusha penalty ensured victory. Well Zambia lost identical 1 0 scorelines in Kinshasa, Tunis and Rabat. Yes Zoom used George Lwandamina in 1.0 loss in Rabat. As far I can recall, the big guns lined up for Zambia in those away qualifiers.

All the above mentioned players are spot on with the exception of the coach,I think that is Mr.Ucar Chitalu as in the tournament,I have no idea.
Thats Richard Mwanza, second choice goalie and not ‘Ucar’.
???? = Derby Makinka ( i think)
Squatting first left = Derby Makinka
Wow! This awesome, am lucky to blog with bloggers who have rich info and who watched the real boyz by then. I only use to here from Aunt that the goalie for Zambia was bayama , but after 93 I was able to enjoy watching Kalu, and Charlie from their clubs. Yaba I was young kanshi mwe!
Coach is late boniface simutowe
CAN 1990
The tournament is CAN 1990
This was the team that played Morocco in the opening group game of the 1990 World Cup qualifiers in Rabat. We lost 1-0…
Now look at that team carefully and tell me if there was any biased in team selection. We have a few pros in Kalu,Wisdom and Charlie, the profund warriors, Nkana, Mighty, power players etc. Zambia didn’t need a bunch of pros as our local league was competitive enough to produce top notch players. No Jackson Mwanza type of players that time. Everybody died a little when called upon unlike the players of nowadays. I rest my case.
Line-up

The coach’s has escaped but he was a Lt. Colonel in Zambia Army
Mambwe Zimandola likes this…nomba the jersey awe sure.
And if i remember very well, these were donated jerseys from South Korea (Blue, Yellow and White sets)
huh? Donated jerseys? During super Ken we could not afford Jerseys and had to get free jerseys from Apartheid South Africa while they were still holding Nelson Mandela? That’s not good.
South Korea
Super Ken never allowed anything from South Africa!
y didnt kalu pitch up uncle bobs?
hmm Uncle Bobs, paliba data
Respect ku Bakalamba!
I am surprised that I missed Derby Mankinka after we danced the whole night at Tiger’s in Matero when he scored that scorcher against Tunisia.
Eh ba Uncle Bobs muli ba data. I recognized some faces on the lineup, but level of detail you had is impressive.
Ba Zamfoot, who is the man in the tracksuit?
Paradox-club commitments at PSV Eindoven. He wasn’t released. Lwandamina cost us the goal according to running Radio Commentary by the Late “Almighty” Dennis Liwewe
Imwe! There is no George Lwandamina in that picture. That is Timothy “Timo Tiger Teacher” Mwitwa. Ubufi…Lwandamina played for Zambia “B”.

@Positive Thinking the guy in the track suit is Richard Mwanza. He was the second choice Goalkeeper. He was playing for Kabwe Warriors.
