Paper Talk: Sports Minister tells FAZ to hire expatriate coach if they can afford

Minister of Youth, Sport and Child Development Moses Mawere says the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is at liberty to hire an expatriate coach as long as they can afford to pay him.

In an interview in Lusaka on Tuesday with Zambia Daily Mail, Mawere said his ministry will only intervene in the recruitment of an expatriate coach if the matter is brought to their attention.

“First of all, if they [FAZ] decide to fire and re-engage a coach themselves, that means they have the capacity to pay him [new coach]. They are at liberty to fire and hire as long as they are able to raise their own money to pay the coach,” he said

Last week FAZ President Andrew Kamanga said they were convening a technical committee meeting to discuss Nyirenda’s future.

FAZ is under pressure from the Chipolopolo faithful who are calling for the sacking of Wada Wada.

“We are calling a technical committee and I don’t want to pre-empt what will be discussed there.

“Certainly, we are going to review his ( Wedson Nyirenda) performance,” Kamanga said on Muvi TV’s the Assignment programme.

Kamanga also revealed that he is aware that fans want Wada ‘kicked out’ but he has categorically stated he doesn’t have ‘absolute power to fire’ the embattled coach.

“Of course, I know there is general feeling that Wada must be kicked out almost immediately but I do not have the absolute power to fire. The process to review the coach’s performance against set targets is on-going,” He added.

Government is bankrolling Nyirenda’s salary which has been estimated and speculated to be around $10, 000.

  1. Honourable Mawere is not a chipolopolo supporter.I have never seen him at Mwanawasa Stadium or Heroes Stadium. What sport has he been a part of in Zambia?
In times of Crisis like this is this how you provide leadership? The Honorable Minister of Sports should be the one pleading with his excellency the President to hire us a decent coach not shooting such a genuine cause down. I am disappointed with Honorable Mawere honestly.

  2. $10,000 for Wada thus too much faz do your homework there quality coaches in South America even Europe who can be paid slightly above that remember to others it’s more than money but for the love of the game and exposure cv ask Renard..even some South African born coaches are way better than this Nyirenda

  3. i was about to lambast the minister since the government and FAZ were in advanced negotiations on hiring Ingesund when the ministry stepped away based on an opinion expressed by the president which was then turned into gospel. Though I have considered what he is saying on face value, and he is right. It is up to FAZ to engage government on the issue of hiring a coach. Until FAZ steps up to the plate and comes up with a plan and a decision, Government will stay on the sidelines. Kamanga also has stated that there is a process for this to happen.

  4. Kamanga likula with admin issues
With this $10 000 kamanga by now he should have found a better coach than this thing Wada
If this kamanga had some football admin brains he would have gone to the government get that $10 000 , raise ka $5000 top up and get a decent coach
But because this guy is just as dull as the coach he is hoping things will get better with Wada
We might as well kiss bye to afcon
