Nkana break the bank to land Jacob Keli

Kenyan striker Jacob Keli will earn approximately USD2439 (K18,000) a month at Nkana and will be entitled to USD195 (K1,400.00) allowances for every home match

Goal reports that the former AFC Leopards striker Jacob Keli will be paid close to USD58,550 (K410,000.00) during his two year stay at Nkana FC.

The player signed a two year deal with the club three weeks ago making him the second Kenyan to play in Zambia. Former Gor Mahia defender David ‘Calabar’ Owino joined Zesco United last season.

Keli is expected to light up the Zambian league in the second half of the season and the Nkana fans will be hoping he will bring the goals and will be worth the salt.

  1. I don’t mean to sound rude but that 2,000 dollars is peanuts. Really is that what we can call breaking the bank? That is small money even I can pay that guy

    • @John, I think you are on wrong site, we watch Zambian local of Mufulira Wonderers, Nakambala Leopards, ZNS Green Eagles:
Paying K18million per month is alot of money to a player from a country like Kenya. Even Chris Katongo will accept that salary.
Ba John just go and show-off where you watch Italian league, leave us with our PEANUTS! Yes we are poor, we can’t even play games at night there is load-shedding ku Zambia.

  2. I like the idea of bringing in foreign talent to the local league. The hope is that it ups the quality of the local game and also allow our teams to compete in continental club competitions. Let’s see what Jake Keli can do.

    • I tell you Zambian league is becoming exciting with these Congolese, Nigerians, Kenyas, Malawians….The Issac Chansas, now even the Katongo soldiers. Bring-in some chinese too, and Indians, they will accept ama $2000. Na John said he can pay.

  3. $2, 000? Thats about R25, 000; I agree its not a lot of money. Its indeed nothing. Maybe by Zambian standards its much. So really the Zambian economy is that small. I am shocked.

  4. @ billy it is even embarrassing to put the heading as breaking the bank. That is peanuts according to international standards that is not money to talk of. Very embarrassing.

  5. @John who cares whether you can pay him or not. Fact is that is what is on the ground at the moment and there is nothing you can do about it. Unless you are willing to increase the salaries of my dear Nkana players Donashano Malama and Simon Bwalya.

  6. Iwe John, the money is okay waumfwa? Am a Mechanical Engineering working for the mines and don’t get that much. This is Zambia!
Anyway, it good to see “top” players from other countries coming to play in our league. Its good to see MCM pumping in money into Nkana FC. With the coming of 2012 Afcon vetrans and “top” foreign players,we can only expect an improvement in the general standards of our local league.

  7. Not sure what to make of this. Whether to be excited about having internationals gracing our league or to be worried that we no longer can produce strikers locally to the extent that we now have to import from other countries.

    • @Paddy, why comment as if you are on Chipolopolo technical bench? Did Drogba go to English premier league because England can’t produce strikers?

      • @Nostra I don’t have to be on the technical team to express a concern regarding my beloved Chipolopolo. If you understood my comment you’ll note that I’m not against foreign players gracing our league. I’m just looking at the bigger picture which you obviously can’t see. Your example of Drogba playing in the English league is way off the mark. ( If you know what I mean)

  8. Not only r we buying strikkers we hve bought defender n’ midfielders frm other countries in our league. The purpose is to bring competition in our league n’ among our players.

  9. I was of the impression that the ZPL had arrived at the R30,000 per month mark already. If in 2015 R30,000 is regarded breaking the bank then our local league has much more serious problems than I thought. USD2439 or R30,000 cannot be thought of as breaking any bank, what is the average ZPL player salary then?

I know Zambia is poor and all that but this is not a salary that can be considered as breaking the bank truth be told, this is an indication that the ZPL has some serious problems. R30,000 for a supposed top striker!

Yes even the PSL for all its worth has some serious problems when it comes to salaries, the highest earning player is sitting on R450,000 and the lowest PSL player on R5000.

We need some serious money injection in the ZPL. This salary being expressed as breaking the bank actually says a lot about the status of our league.

  10. Is Jimmy Ndlovu available for Nkana Fc this time?I hope kalampa will do well this stanza and no excuses because I believe all has been done to achieve positive results.

  11. Guys, too much talk of comparing the earnings of Zambian players to other nations. Obviously Kenyan league is not paying as much as a kana. Also, you have to compare these wages to what locals are making. How many people in Zambia or anywhere on the continent would not jump at a chance to earn $2000 a month. This is a big deal depending on which perspective you look at it from. Not long ago, local league players worked office jobs while playing football in the afternoons. Appreciate the gold nugget rather than sit and compare it to other people’s treasure chests.

  12. @Positive thinking well said. We talking of Africa where in most countries people live on less than $1 a day. We actually talking of families of 3/4 people living on a Dollar or less actually.
So $2000 in Africa is good money.

  13. I have watched Jacob Keli several times in Kenya and with good service, Keli is a very potent striker. He scores different kinds of goals and the boy is a very disciplined humble player. If he gets near the “D” area his shots normally are on target. He doesn’t miss often and he is very slippery. He is not afraid of big defenders despite his size. If his mind settles, He will put defenders the fear of God into them.

  14. @Abdulkader, the money is in Kwacha, not Kenyan shillings. The Zambian kwacha is stronger than the Kenyan Shilling. In Kenya he will earn Ksh250,000 per month which is by far way more than any player earns in the KPL. Top player in the KPL earn around $900 USD, and that is if they are paid on time. Kenyan football has the worst management of football in the continent, despite having some of the most passionate fans and talented football players. I mentored David Owino of Zesco, while he was at Gor Mahia, and was glad that he got a chance to go and earn a decent living in Zambia. I have also watched the Zambian league grow, and it is evident by their winning the Afcon a few years back. Facilities such as pitches have been given face lifts, and amenities such as stadia changing rooms, fan stands, and even club buses are way better than what we have in Kenya. I am a big proponent of African football, and look at all countries from the perspective of African progress, rather than a myopic view of regional or local dominance. If an African team wins the world cup, we all win, especially from a psychological perspective. I realized our African boys need mentors as well as agents. Ever wondered why talented Zambian players such as Mayuka never made it in the premier league. It boils down to mentors who can guide them through every aspect of life, especially the new found wealth, and super stardom lifestyles. The ability to constantly push oneself through challenges, barriers, and also stay at the top. Jacob is a very well educated and grounded person. He will flourish because he is being taken care of, and he appreciates the “little” that he gets. Salaries are relative, just like trying to compare South African salaries to Premier League salaries would be ridiculous. Players have to live within their means, and if they want more they have to work harder and shoot for goals that they set. Sorry if this has been a bit long winded, but I have a voracious passion for African football, and the sport in general.
