League leaders Makeni All Stars underlined their promotion credentials with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over relegation-threatened River Plate, while Roan United and Trident FC kept the heat on in a pulsating Week 30 of the ZPL Men’s National League played on Saturday.
Makeni showed champions’ character, overturning a 2-1 deficit to snatch all three points and move to 59 points at the summit.
Ignitions Angel Phiri had earlier cancelled out River Plate’s opener before Cosmas Phiri and Joseph Chandwila completed the turnaround in an entertaining five-goal thriller.
Hot on their heels are Roan United, who edged Jumulo 1-0 courtesy of an early strike from Emmanuel Diamond Muchinga. The Luanshya outfit now sit just a point behind Makeni on 58, keeping the title race finely poised heading into the final stretch.
Trident FC remain firmly in the promotion conversation after dispatching Kitwe United 2-0. A quickfire brace from Dryson Phiri just before and after halftime ensured maximum points, as Trident continue to stalk the leading pack.
The biggest upset of the afternoon came in Ndola, where Chirundu United suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Ndola United. Saulosi Banda’s early goal proved decisive, lifting Ndola United out of the relegation zone and up to 13th, while Chirundu slipped in the standings.
Forest Rangers capitalised on Chirundu’s stumble, climbing into third place with 53 points after a late 1-0 win over Atletico Lusaka.
John Kosamu emerged the hero with an 85th-minute strike that sealed a crucial victory for Forest.
Elsewhere, Chambishi FC and Lumwana Radiants settled for a goalless draw in a tightly contested encounter, sharing the spoils in a match that produced few clear-cut chances.
