Mighty Mufulira Wanderers picked a point off Red Arrows with a 1 – 1 draw that saw them surge to the top of the log on match day two of the 2019 transitional season.
It was Red Arrows who were dominating play but the away side will feel they dropped two points as they scored first through Brian Chewe and saw a Joseph Sitali late penalty saved by Kenny Mumba in goal for Arrows.
The hosts made four changes to the team that started in the 4 – 1 loss to Zanaco and as expected, there were changes in defense which saw Joseph Zimba and Webster Mulenga give way for Martin Kaonga and Bronson Chama respectively. Daniel Sibanda and Stanley Nshimbi who both did not see any action against Zanaco walked straight into the starting eleven for Justine Zulu and Josephat Kasusu respectively.
Mighty on the other hand looked a similar side to the one that butchered Prison Leopards 3 – 0 in the opening fixture. But it was Arrows who were looking sharp and pressing the visitors from the start with Lubinda Mundia and skipper Bruce Musakanya looking combining well going forward.
Nchimunya Munene and Bernard Mapili were holding up well in central defence for Mighty and they pounced on the counter attack when Sitali launched a long ball to the left to find John Goma on the left in an attacking position.
Goma crossed the ball for Chewe who was arriving in the box on the far side and he beat Martin Kaonga before going round Mumba in goal to slot the ball home in a congested area against the run of play in the 54th minute.
The Airmen responded in the 69th minute when Lubinda Mundia headed home a Jimmy Chisenga cross.
It looked like Mighty would bag maximum points when Janny Sikazwe pointed to the spot after substitute Chrispin Sakulanda brought down John Kanyembo. Skipper Sitali stepped up to take the penalty and his poorly taken kick was stopped by Mumba.
The draw sees newly promoted Mufulira Wanderers maintain their unbeaten and will occupy top position for now on four points. Arrows have one point.
Elsewhere in Stream A, Green Buffaloes were held to a goalless draw away from home by newly promoted Prison Leaopards. Buffaloes who finished third on the log last season have now gone two games without a win and are level on points with Leopards.
In Stream B, Buildcon occupy top position on four points despite being held to a 1 – 1 draw by MUZA.
Power Dynamos were comprehensively beaten 2 – 0 by Green Eagles in Choma, while Circuit City picked a vital three points over Lumwana Radiants with a 1 – 0 home win.
